Arun Jaitley not allowed to visit Kishtwar

BJP leader Arun Jaitley, who had planned to lead a party team to trouble-torn Kishtwar in Jammu region, found his plans foiled as authorities did not allow him to proceed after he landed at Jammu airport on Sunday morning. He has been requested to return, an official said.

Meanwhile, curfew was extended to Kathua, Samba and Udhampur districts of the State.

The indefinite curfew imposed in Kishtwar ever since riots broke out on Friday has remained, without a break, for three days now. Authorities also brought Jammu city and Rajouri town under curfew on Saturday, in a bid to maintain law and order.

Two people died in the communal riots that broke out in Kishtwar on the day of Eid. Over 20 sustained injuries in firing by unruly mobs. Arson and tension later spread to other parts of the State.

Research Chair on Legal Anthropology opened at Sastra

Solicitor General Mohan Parasaran on Saturday launched the Sastra University's School of Law's initiative to conduct research on legal anthropology and advised students to expand their knowledge beyond legal boundaries.

Mr. Parasaran inaugurated a Research Chair on Legal Anthropology with a seed corpus of Rs. 50 lakh to conduct research in the interdisciplinary field of legal anthropology at a function in the university in Thanjavur. He also inaugurated three scholarship schemes named in memory of legal legends — Justice Patanjali Sastri, Nani Palkhivala and G. Ramaswami. The best students of Sastra's BB.A. LLB B.Com. LLB & B.B.A., LLB programme will be awarded a citation and a cash prize of Rs. 1,00,000 under this initiative, he said.

Tracing the history of successful jurists, Mr. Parasaran delivered a special lecture on "Being a Successful Jurist." He narrated his experiences and evolutionary success stories of leading jurists.

Justice S. Nagamuthu, Judge, Madras High Court, offered his felicitations and stressed on the importance of judiciary's alignment with socio-cultural underpinnings.

Eminent columnist S. Gurumurthy, who has also been appointed Research Chair Professor at Sastra University, stressed on the importance of studying the convergence of law and anthropology.

S. Vaidhyasubramaniam, Dean, Sastra University, told The Hindu that the objective of establishing the endowment was to trace the contours of political, social, theological and cultural models of anthropology and interlinking them with constitutional law.

Central forces arrive in Kerala as govt. braces for stir

With
LDF
opposition threatening to lay an indefinite
siege of the secretariat from Monday
demanding resignation of Chief Minister
Oommen Chandy over the solar panel scam,
Central forces on Saturday arrived in
Kerala to assist the police.
Out of 20 companies of forces sought by the
state, the first batch of ITBP personnel
reached Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday
morning and one company of BSF in
politically volatile Kannur district as the
CPI(M) and its LDF allies started galvanising
about one lakh volunteers to be dispatched
for the protest.
According to official sources, more
contingents of central forces would reach
the state in the next two days to maintain
law and order during the siege, especially
since it has been planned during the run-up
to the Independence Day.
The Central Stadium adjacent to the
secretariat complex is the main venue of
Independence Day celebrations, to be
attended by Governor, Chief Minister and
other dignitaries.
Unfazed by the preparations to tackle the
protest sternly, the LDF has begun to
mobilise volunteers from across the state to
be sent to the state capital.
“Without fail, the volunteers will reach the
state capital at the right time as planned
whatever be the preparations made by the
government to deal with the protest,” the
CPI(M) Kannur district secretary P
Jayarajan told reporters.
Seeking to pre-empt the risk posed by such
a large gathering of protesters in the city,
police have instructed hoteliers and lodgers
here not to accommodate the volunteers
pouring in from all the 14 districts in the
state.
Educational institutions in the capital will
remain closed for two days from Monday in
view of traffic disruptions and other
inconvenience to be caused by the protest.
As the lead partner of the LDF, CPI(M)
alone would be mobilising about 75,000
volunteers through its nearly 25,000 branch
committees in the state and the CPI another
25,000 through its grass-root units.
National leaders of the Left and allied
parties, including former Prime Minister
and JD(S) leader H.D. Deve Gowda, CPI(M)’s
Prakash Karat and CPI’s Sudhakar Reddy
would be addressing the protesters on the
initial day.
Solar scam, rocking the state for some two
months, has brought Mr. Chandy under a
cloud, especially after the arrest of a
Personal Assistant in his office for his
alleged links with the accused. Another
Personal Staff member and gunman have
been removed from the CMO after they
came under shadow of suspicion.
The scam pertains to financial cheating of
several people by the accused Biju
Radkahrishnan and Saritha Nair, both
under arrest, by offering clients solar
energy solutions.
The accused allegedly flaunted their clout
with the CM’s office for duping the
unsuspecting clients of huge sums.
Ever since it surfaced, LDF has been
pressing Mr. Chandy’s resignation and a
judicial probe into the scam, a demand
rejected by him.

Australia seize initiative in fourth Ashes test

Alastair Cook departed for a painstaking 51 as Australia seized the initiative in the fourth Ashes test Friday, reducing England to 155-4 by tea on the opening day.

Jonathan Trott (49) and Kevin Pietersen (26) were the other wickets to fall after lunch, both removed by offspinner Nathan Lyon after helping up the run-rate following a stodgy morning session.

Captain Cook was far more circumspect as he ground his way to a 32nd test half-century off 153 balls, before misjudging an inswinging delivery from Ashes debutant Jackson Bird and finding himself trapped lbw.

Australia, needing a victory to keep alive hopes of drawing the series, relied on the much-criticized Hot Spot to make the early breakthrough as Joe Root departed for 16 after edging behind.

Aussies rely on DRS for breakthrough in 4th test

Australia relied on the much-criticized Hot Spot technology to make an early breakthrough in the fourth Ashes test as England labored to 57-1 by lunch on the opening day.

Joe Root (16) was initially given not out by the on-field umpire when he edged Shane Watson behind to wicketkeeper Brad Haddin, but Australia asked for a review and Hot Spot showed the faintest of nicks.

Captain Alastair Cook was 21 not out and Jonathan Trott unbeaten on 13 as England made slow progress on Friday at the start of a match which it needed to draw or win to clinch a third straight Ashes series.

The English are 2-0 up in the five-match series and have already retained the Ashes.

The buildup to Chester-le-Street's first Ashes test had been dominated by the controversy surrounding the Decision Review System, with Australian broadcaster Channel Nine claiming this week that silicon tape might have been attached to the edges of bats to "fool" the technology in light of a string of contentious calls in the opening three matches.

Those claims were angrily denied by both teams, who went on to reiterate their support for DRS, but the flap meant excitement spread through the ground when Australia appealed the Root decision after England had crawled to 34 off 17.3 overs.

Third umpire Marais Erasmus wasted no time in overturning the call of on-field umpire Tony Hill when the smallest of white marks was shown on Root's bat on the replays. Snickometer confirmed the edge, too.

Root had been the busier of the two openers, with Cook very watchful as he saw off the new ball after winning the toss under brightening skies in the north-east. It made for a dull opening session as England struggled to get the accurate Watson (1-8 off seven overs) or debutant Jackson Bird (0-15 off eight overs) away.

When drinks were taken after the first hour, England was 31-0 after 14 overs.

Trott came in for Root and only got off the mark when he edged Peter Siddle through the slip cordon for four, one of only three boundaries before lunch.

England was unchanged from the drawn third test at Old Trafford while Australia dropped Mitchell Starc for Bird.

Markets drift despite more positive China news

Another round of largely better than expected Chinese economic data failed to lift the lacklustre mood in financial markets on Friday amid the traditional summer lull in trading activity.

Figures showed inflation in July steady at an annual rate of 2.7 per cent. That was below market expectations for a modest increase to 2.8 per cent. Meanwhile, industrial production rose 9.7 percent in the year to June, ahead of expectations for a 9 per cent increase. The only modest disappointment was the news that retail sales grew 13.2 percent in July from a year earlier, slightly slower than June's growth rate.

Overall, analysts said the figures added weight to the argument that the recent soft patch in the world's second-largest economy may have come to an end. However, market reaction was fairly muted, as stocks had rallied already on Thursday after strong Chinese trade numbers.

In Europe, the FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was up 0.2 percent at 6,544 while Germany's DAX fell 0.2 percent to 8,303. The CAC-40 in France was 0.1 percent lower at 4,059.

Wall Street was poised for a subdued opening, with both Dow futures and the broader S&P 500 futures 0.4 percent lower.

With the scheduled economic news on the light side, analysts think U.S. markets may drift in the run-up to the weekend. Trading levels in the U.S. in particular often dry up in the latter part of August and only pick up again once traders return to their desk following the Labor Day holiday in early September.

Currency markets were fairly subdued, too, with the euro 0.1 percent higher at $1.3376 and the dollar down 0.1 percent at 96.47 yen.

Earlier in Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 index ended 0.1 percent higher at 13,615.19 while South Korea's Kospi closed 0.2 percent lower at 1,880.71.

The mood in China was a bit more positive after the figures. The Shanghai Composite Index gained 0.4 percent to 2,052.24 and the Shenzhen Composite Index for China's second, smaller stock market gained 0.2 percent to 996.42. Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 0.7 percent to 21,807.56.

Chocolate museum in Mexico

Officials have ordered the demolition of the Chocolate Museum, which is being built by the Choco Story Chichen company in the Chichen Itza archaeological zone "without authorization", the Mexican National Anthropology and History Institute, or INAH, said.

The company has been notified that the project "is improper" and must be demolished, the INAH said in a statement.

Officials determined that the Federal Law on Monuments and Archaeological, Artistic and Historic Zones "does not allow the construction of the museum", the INAH said.

The Belgian-owned company cannot operate the museum in a field in the Chichen Itza zone because it holds "archaeological elements that are part of pre-Hispanic structures", the federal agency said.

Are Eggs Good for You? 30 Reasons to Eat Eggs

Are Eggs Good for You? 30 Reasons to Eat Eggs
Eggs have gotten a bad rap in the past and
unfortunately, many today still believe the wide
spread misinformation.
Are eggs good for you? Do they cause heart
disease? Do they raise cholesterol? Should I
avoid them?
Depending on who you ask, you may get very
different answers to these questions. Many
traditional doctors still would answer that eggs
increase cholesterol and should be avoided.
Some are adamant that only the egg white
should be used because of the cholesterol in the
yolk. Even when trying to research this topic,
some articles still push the idea that eggs are
harmful and in order to prevent health
problems, one should avoid them.
I have to admit that I once believed the
propaganda spread in the media and by drug
pushing corporations. It wasn’t until I first
began seeing a naturopath that I heard that eggs
are good for you and the doctors are the ones
who have it wrong.

Bottled water in your car is very dangerous!

This is an article that should be share to anyone
important in your life!
Bottled water in your car is very dangerous!
People should not drink bottled
water that has been left in a car. The heat reacts
with the chemicals in the plastic of the bottle
which releases dioxin into the water.

Dioxin is a toxin increasingly found in breast
cancer tissue. So please
be careful and do not drink bottled water that
has been left in a car.

Use a stainless steel canteen
or a glass bottle instead of plastic!
This information is also being circulated at
Walter Reed Army Medical
Center … No plastic containers in microwaves.

No plastic water
bottles in freezers. No plastic wrap in
microwaves.
Dioxin chemical causes cancer, especially breast
cancer. Dioxins are highly poisonous to cells in
our bodies. Don’t freeze plastic bottles with
water
in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic.
Recently the Wellness
Program Manager at Castle Hospital , was on a
TV program to explain
this health hazard.
We should not be heating food in the microwave
using plastic containers…..
This especially applies to foods that contain fat.
The combination of fat, high heat and plastic
releases dioxin
into the food.

Instead use glass, such as Pyrex or
ceramiccontainers
for heating food… You get the same result, but
without the dioxin.. So,
such things as TV dinners, instant soups, etc.,
should be removed from
their containers and heated in something else.
Paper isn’t bad but you don’t know what is in
the paper. It’s safer to
use tempered glass, such as Pyrex, etc.

A while ago some of the fast food restaurants
moved away from the styrene foam containers
to paper. The dioxin
problem is one of the reasons….
Plastic wrap, such as Cling film, is just as
dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked
in the microwave.

As the food is nuked, the high heat causes
poisonous toxins to actually
melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the
food. Cover food with
a paper towel instead.

A Letter to the Girl I Love

Dear XXXX,
It has been a long time since we met. I can’t believe how long I’ve been loving you and how long I contained my love.
The look of your eyes and that smile that you gave me, melted my heart away. Those smooth cheeks you have, oh, I wished I could’ve given you a kiss right away. As soon as I see your face, my knees go weak, my heart throbs hoping to feel you around me. Your body is perfection and to me it does not matter.
I loved the way you looked at me that first day. I couldn’t talk, my mouth felt numb and I stuttered. I wished I had the courage to do so ’cause you’re the most beautiful angel I have ever seen. Maybe God closed my eyes to other girls and you attracted my attention. I have been waiting for you for a year now, I hope I’ll be able to talk to you soon. I just don’t have the courage.
Thanks for the smile you gave me. I really felt so lightened inside that I melted. I could say nothing but to just stare at your natural beauty. I wish we could go out together one day and we could have our nights by the bay and that I could pour out my feelings to you.
Thank you, you awaken me, deep inside. Even if you don’t love me, I’ll always wait for you and no matter what, you are in my heart… no matter what happens. I hope I’ll be able to hold you in my arms and tell you that I love you. That’s all I need from you. I love you and that’s a promise.
Love always,
Nnyeo.

Zimbabwe board has no money to pay for players' meals in hotel

Last week, after taking a 3-0 series lead, the boisterous Indian cricket team left the Harare Sports Club in a rush to celebrate the triumph at their hotel.
But their rivals, the Zimbabweans, like on all match days, were in no hurry to leave.
With no team hotel to go to, their dinner was a buffet at the venue. Besides, the home players had to also discuss car pool arrangements or figure out public transport schedules to reach Bulawayo for the second leg of the series.
In Bulawayo, for the last two games, the Zimbabweans have checked in at Holiday Inn. But the team still has to travel to the stadium three times a day for meals.

Dindigul Biryani

Till you meet people like M. Nallathambi, you
wouldn’t know the worth of Dindigul biryani. He
travels 20 km daily from his native village to
Tamil Nadu’s biryani city to relish a plateful of
mutton biryani at Dindigul’s oldest biryani
restaurant, the “Thalappakatti”. “Unless I am ill
or caught up in something important…,” says
the 60-year-old.
And there were many more like him who filled
up the small restaurant on East Car Street. The
time was 11.30 a.m. So, was the biryani a late
breakfast or early lunch? Till I went on this
assignment, I did not believe biryani could be
eaten thrice a day.
It is said that true seekers of biryani must visit
Thalappakatti, established in 1957. And to this
list now are also included Ponram Biriyani,
which came up almost two decades later in 1973
and the fairly recent, Venu Biriyani. Apart from
the trademark biryani they sell, what is common
to them is their respective army of customers
who swear by their names.
I started my biryani sojourn at Ponram’s. The
dining area was redolent with the aroma of rice
and spice. Naghendran, who grew up watching
his grandfather V. Ponram Yadav and father P.
Ramachandra Yadav making biriyani, ushered me
into a narrow alley where the master cook
looked as though he was in a sauna. His day had
begun inside the wood-fired kitchen covered in
layers of soot. He had to get 10 kg of biryani
ready for the first round in the next two hours.
“My grandmother’s recipe is zealously guarded
and followed here,” smiled Naghendran. But the
cook hardly spoke or looked up. He was a
picture of concentration as he moved from one
aluminium pan to the other to check, mix or stir
the various ingredients that go into the making
of the famous biryani. He makes them in
instalments of 10 kg — which goes up to 25 kg
during festivals — from breakfast to dinner
time. Ponram restaurant with two sit-ins and
two take-away joints sells 200 kg of biryani
everyday and 1,000 take-aways.
“We use our home-made masalas. We rear our
own goats to get good quality mutton. The
seeraga samba rice used for making biryani is
grown in Kodaikanal waters,” was all Naghendran
shared about the success of his family brand.
He insisted I taste the biryani first and also
suggested the best way would be to start with
few spoonfuls of “empty” biryani and then move
on to the full. This was done to explain how the
seeraga samba rice used in Dindigul biryani
absorbs all the flavours of the ingredients.
Each grain of rice is uniformly marinated in the
masalas. And since the meat added to the
biryani is always more than the quantity of rice,
the seeraga samba soaks in the taste of all the
spices and flavours of the meat.
I overdosed on Ponram biryani. The strong
aroma of cloves and cardamom, and the
accompanying raita made with rich and creamy
curd was value-addition.
Biryani recipes are no doubt age-old and the
method of preparation too is. The biryani is
always slow-cooked over firewood. Once the
rice is semi-cooked, it is transferred to the dum
style — hot coal is placed on the lid of the
vessel so that heat spreads evenly on all sides;
the meat inside becomes melting soft and
succulent and the grains of rice stay separate.
Thalappakatti’s story too is about exploiting a
housewife’s talent in preparing the unique style
of biryani. Nagasamy Naidu who used to run a
betel nut shop felt that his wife’s special
blending of spices could take him places. So he
opened a small shop — the Anandha Vilas
Biriyani Hotel. While the biryani sold out fast,
interestingly his customers did not refer to the
joint, which could seat four people at a time, by
its actual name. The proprietor who always sat
at the cash counter attired in white shirt-dhoti
and turban lent the name as customers
spontaneously called it “Thalappakatti”. The
small shop still remains on the East Car Street,
but sells only takeaway parcels now from 4 p.m.
to 6 p.m. daily. The new restaurant is bang
opposite.
“Our emphasis is on taste which comes from
meticulous selection of ingredients,” said
Thalappakatti manager Dhanapal.
Earlier all the ingredients were apparently
prepared by Thalappakatti Naidu himself, but
today quality masala products are used.
What distinguishes the generic “Dindigul biryani”
is the quality of water used in its preparation.
The Kamarajar Lake water from Athoor is said to
enhance the flavour of Dindigul biryani.
