It's a known fact that actress Ramya has become a busy bee in politics, and her political career has left the producers of her upcoming movies in lurch. Now, a leading daily has reported that the producers have invested a huge amount on the movies, which were signed by Ramya.

Sources from the film industry said that the producers of Ramya's upcoming movies - Aryan , Neer Dose , Dil Ka Raja and an untitled bilingual flick, have invested Rs 20 crores in total.

Before contesting in election, the actress had started the shooting of few movies, which she had signed. After the election, Ramya's dates were not available for the movie makers due to her political engagements.

It is said that Ramya had also promised to finish the project by this year end. After the election, she had also given a hint of quitting the acting. She had said, "Public will not accept an MP who is running around trees in short skirts and sleeveless blouses."

Ramya was the first actress from Kannada film industry to enter Lok Sabha. She won over the Congress ticket in the recent Lok Sabha by-polls, which was held in August, 2013. Kareena Kapoor Spends Time With Bro Ranbir's Girlfriend!

Yes, they indeed have a strong connection. And if we go just by rumours, we believe that B-Town actresses Kareena Kapoor Khan and Katrina Kaif are soon to be sister-in-laws, keeping in mind about Ranbir Kapoor's rumoured affair with the latter. And that's what we have seen recently, after the two, who were once supposedly rivals, were spotted bonding like never before on the sets of the movie Phantom.

As per the reports, Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif are currently shooting for their upcoming movie Phantom in Beruit. Kareena Kapoor too was spotted accompanying hubby Saif on the movie sets. Interestingly, Bebo and Kat were seen chit chatting and sharing some healthy conversation with each other.

In the past, it was rumoured that Kareena Kapoor had a tiff with Katrina Kaif, after the rumours revealed that that two girls were fighting with each other over the importance given to their roles in actor Salman Khan's Eid release Bodyguard. While Bebo was the film's leading lady, Kat made an appearance with Salman. But later, Kareena refuted all such rumours, claiming,"Why should there be a problem between the two of us? Both of us do our own films. I am busy doing mine, while she has her share of work. Also, I am here to do my job". Bebo further expressed her liking towards Katrina saying, "She is a lovely girl and we have always been friendly. Such talk is really strange".

Eat Smart this Diwali

Eat Smart this Diwali

Eat Smart this Diwali

In a land where food is an emotional affair that our relationships thrive on, can we fulfill our obligation to eat without weighing down the scale? Yes! Nutritionists and fitness experts tell Averil Nunes.

Starving is Stupid!
Don't starve yourself during the day, or you'll be ravenous by dinner time and will overindulge.

Eat Fruits and Leave
Never go for a party on an empty stomach. A clear soup, salad, fruit or buttermilk will keep hunger pangs at bay and ensure you don't overeat party food.

The Gravy Trail
Steer clear of gravy; pick the chicken from the curry, the paneer from the makhani, and the vegetables not the gravy.

Drinking Buddies
Choose nimbu paani, jal jeera and chaas (buttermilk), over aerated, alcohol-loaded or sugar-based drinks. Don't forget to hydrate with that miracle elixir, H2O.

Nutty Endeavours
Dates, almonds, cashews and pistachios rolled in coconut are as tasty as they are nutritious. When presented with a platterful of choice, pick nuts over mithai.

Sugar Cravings
Pacify sugar cravings with natural sugar from dried fruits, dates and raisins. Even if these do not satiate your sweet tooth, you'll end up eating less mithai.

Steam, Bake, Grill and Roast
Choose steamed, baked, grilled and roasted snacks over fried stuff. Bengali sweets such as sondesh and rasgullas tend to be more nutritious and lower in calories.

Tech Talk
Invest in an air fryer, which uses hot air to cook anything that would traditionally be dunked in oil over its head.

Love it or Leave It
If you don't love it, don't eat it. Save the calories for food you love. And, when you're stuffed just say No! (Politely, lest you offend the more traditional amongst us).

The Substitutes
Replace maida (flour) with gehu (wheat), nachni, jowar and bajra. You could try using low fat milk and avoiding full cream, but this may result in a sweet treat that does not taste as good as you remember. Instead eat what you love, just a little less.

Keep Moving
If you don't work out for the recommended 30-45 minutes daily, Diwali's a good time to start. If you do work out, increase the duration to take care of those yummylicious extra calories heading your way.

Plate Up
This will help you avoid the thoughtless hand-to-mouth munching that piles on calories. Using a smaller plate like a dessert plate for dinner, should help you keep your portion servings reasonable.

Quantify (One a day, two a day, three a day)
Decide how much you think your body can take, pick your favourites and enjoy. You can compensate by reducing your total intake or burning a few extra calories while exercising.

Go lean protein
Boosting protein consumption with beans, seafood, lean meat, skinless poultry and low-fat dairy will keep you feeling full longer. Complement this with high-fiber grains, fruits and vegetables.

Don't Skip Breakfast
Several studies have proven that people who eat breakfast end up eating fewer calories throughout the day.

A Pauper for Dinner
Follow that old saying, an emperor's breakfast, a prince's lunch and a pauper's dinner and keep your dinner light with vegetables, salads and fruits.

A Right Time for Sweets?
Eating sweets with meals will cause your blood sugar to spike sharply. Instead, enjoy sweets as a snack in themselves or after some activity.

Nibble, Don't Gobble
If you love new tastes, satisfy cravings with a bite (or two). Savour the flavour, texture and aroma. Eating slowly will give your brain time to receive your stomach's 'happy and satiated' signals.

Ayurveda Says
This is the best season to digest farsan and faral (Diwali savouries) that increase bone and joint strength, boost the nervous sytem and enhance vitality, as long as you use homemade ghee, don't use short-cut recipes and avoid over indulging.

Supreme Court exempts Jayalalithaa from appearance

NEW DELHI,
The Supreme Court on Tuesday exempted Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa from personal appearance in a trial court in Bangalore scheduled for Wednesday in the disproportionate assets case because of the ongoing Assembly session.

But it asked the other accused - V.K. Sasikala, V.N. Sudhakaran and J. Elavarasi - to appear in the court as per the October 3 order of special judge G.B. Mudigoudar.

A Bench of Justices B.S. Chauhan and S.A. Bobde passed this order on a fresh writ petition Ms. Jayalalithaa and others filed against the appointment of Mr. Mudigoudar to succeed Balakrishna, who retired on September 30.

Senior counsel Shekhar Naphade, appearing for Ms. Jayalalithaa and others, faulted the Karnataka government and the Karnataka High Court for appointing the new judge on October 3, ignoring the Supreme Court's September 30 order. When he said the High Court had not even met to consider extending the services of Mr. Balakrishna, Justice Chauhan asked him: "On what basis are you making this allegation? Did you verify this fact with the High Court? Did you get this information under the RTI [Act]? How can you say the High Court had not considered our order?"

When counsel said, "It is based on inference and this court may call for the records," Justice Bobde observed: "When you make serious allegations against the High Court, you must be very careful when you [the petitioner] file your affidavit." Counsel replied: "There is more to it than meets the eye, and inference can be drawn that the High Court had not complied with your order."

When counsel insisted that Wednesday's proceedings be stayed, Justice Bobde said: "Having passed an order that there must be a speedy trial, we can't stay the proceedings."

Granting exemption to Ms. Jayalalithaa, the Bench, however, asked the petitioners to file a better affidavit, explaining how they came to know that the High Court had not complied with the September 30 order. It scheduled further hearing for Wednesday.

Allowing Bhavani Singh to continue as Special Public Prosecutor, the Supreme Court had asked the State government and the High Court to consider extending the services of Mr. Balakrishna who attained the age of superannuation on September 30, so that the trial could be expedited. The petitioners said that without implementing this directive, the State issued a notification on October 3, appointing Mr. Mudigoudar as presiding judge with retrospective effect from October 1.

On October 3 itself, the Special Judge took up the case, directing them to appear in court on October 30. They said that to the best of their information, there had been no meeting of the judges on the administrative side of the High Court, "which is the practice followed before any such appointment." They sought that the notification be quashed and all further proceedings in the trial court and the operation of the October 3 order passed by the judge be stayed.

Home-made, off the shelf

chennai,
Everyone is looking for store-bought but home-made food these days. We're shopping at organic stores, buying sustainable produce and want things that go beyond a mere brand name. That's how home-grown ethical businesses have come to flourish in the city. Whether it is organic dairy products, vegetables or vegan fare, these entrepreneurs work in their farms and home-kitchens to bring you fresh and nutritious food.

Take Trader Koshy, for instance, a home business run by Ashley and Sneha Koshy from their five-acre farm in Thiruporur. They sell organic milk, paneer, ghee, fruits and vegetables. "We were ancestrally farmers but my grandfather broke the mould. I was working as a consultant in the U.S. and wanted to come back here and work on an education model for the underpriviliged. When I was travelling around the country working on that, I realised the land here is so fertile and gives many good things. I then decided to bring out beautiful food to the city," says Ashley.

While they began selling in retail stores only in July, the Koshys have had customers long before that.

"Everything in the farm is done traditionally. Our eight cows are hand-milked and the milk is boiled in wood fire, as it was done many years ago. So our dairy products have a certain smoky and sweet taste that the customers like. We add no water and deliver in stainless steel containers," he says.

The Organic Farm, based out of East Coast Road, also deals in dairy and organic produce, and owner Alladi Mahadevan has been selling his greens in the city for over 12 years. "We grow 23 types of country vegetables - gourds, greens, tomatoes, brinjal, chillies, and also fruits such as lemon, papaya, guava and sapota," says Alladi. "We sell ghee as well." He also sells farm inputs such as panchagavya, vermin-compost, neem cake powder, neem oil and more. "People buy organic greens primarily for health, and then for taste too. They also cook faster since there are no pesticides," he says.

The city is slowly turning not just organic but also vegan. And bringing in some innovation in this sector is Natraj from Auroville. A home-based business started five years ago by Nilesh Nisar and his wife Geeta in their home-kitchen, Natraj is a brand of nutritious snacks. "We started off as a small concern based out of Auroville. The two things we concentrated on were food quality and hygiene. We began with vegan cashew toffees and then experimented with dry fruit laddus," says Nilesh.

When the products garnered good response in the Auroville vegan community, it expanded to Puducherry and more recently, Chennai. "Now we've got a room sectioned off in the house just to run this and have employed around 15 local women." The range of products now include dark, fruit and nut and walnut chocolates (vegan) and a honey range that has fig and honey, amla and honey, and 12 Elements (a snack made from 12 ingredients).

And all of these entrepreneurs are particular about ethical practices. "Our cows are treated better than we are," laughs Ashley. "They are hand-massaged, and during cold nights, we light a fire near their shed so they're warm. The food they eat is grown in the farm and they are allowed to graze on two acres. Apart from this, we do composting and produce our own manure, and use neem oil and cow dung as pesticide." Ashley soon hopes to create a network of farmers in order to increase the variety and number of produce.

Alladi's farm started off as any other farm did, and in 1993, the family decided to turn organic. "The old method meant a lot of crop loss and when we realised the benefits of going organic we did. Our milk is not toned or skimmed," he says.

Alladi also brings in children to teach them about organic faming and, "In fact, we even taught mathematics for a group of students using the farm," he says. Natraj's products have no oil, khova, preservatives or milk. "We didn't want anything that would harm people's health, so all our focus went on making quality vegan products," says Nilesh. "And our way of giving back to society was employing those women." The unit produces 3,000 toffees and 1,200 laddus every day.

No political conspiracy behind blasts, says Nitish Kumar

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar asked political parties to shed their differences and fight unitedly against those trying to "disturb the atmosphere in Bihar that can have its impact on the country as a whole". He ruled out political conspiracy behind the serial blasts and said that the two back-to-back blasts, first in Bodhgaya and now in Patna, posed a serious security challenge for the state government.

The chief minister, who was scheduled to attend a yoga meet in Munger , cancelled the trip and also deferred his visit for the two-day JD(U) convention in Rajgir.

"I was supposed to reach Rajgir but had to cancel it because of the extraordinary situation. The party meeting will go as per schedule but the state government will keep focus on the blast investigation. The Munger has already been called," said Nitish. There was no word yet on whether he will attend a meeting of Left parties and some regional parties scheduled to be held in New Delhi on October 30.

The chief minister, who refrained from responding to any of the jibes from Narendra Modi at the rally, said: "We may have political differences but such things (blasts) never happened in the past. We, as political parties, attack each other but the blast is a blot on the glorious tradition of the state."

Nitish said the serial blasts were not a matter of security lapses because of two reasons - there was no Intelligence alert from any state or central agency and adequate security arrangements were in place for the rally.

Asked if the flurry of incidents had anything to do with the JD(U) snapping ties with BJP, he said such things should not be read and it cannot be said that Bihar was now being made a target by terrorists.
