Swami Vivekananda suffered from 31 ailments

In a life-span of only 39 years, Swami Vivekananda, who spread the message of India's spiritual heritage across the world, battled several health problems all along and no less than 31 diseases and ailments.

'The Monk as Man' by renowned Bengali writer Shankar lists insomnia, liver and kidney diseases, malaria, migraine, diabetes and heart ailments as some of the 31 health problems that the Swami faced in the course of his life.

Shankar describes Swami Vivekananda's health problems using a sanskrit quote 'shariram byadhimandiram' --- the body is the temple of diseases.
Ironically, Vivekananda used to emphasise greatly on physical strength and is known for the shocking statement 'Better to play football than read the Gita'.

One of the perennial problems that Vivekananda lived with was chronic insomnia and in a letter to Shashi Bhushan Ghosh dated May 29, 1897, he confided "I never in my life could sleep as soon as I got into bed."
The previous year, Vivekananda seemed to have written to his 'dhira mata' (Sara Bull) from New York complaining about his lack of sleep. "My health has nearly broken down. I have not slept even one night soundly in New York since I came

I wish I could go to the bottom of the sea and have a good, long sleep."
It is also known that Vivekananda used to suffer from diabetes like his father and at that time suitable drugs were unavailable.

Shankar writes that Vivekananda had tried different modes of treatment ranging from allopathic, homoeopathic to ayurvedic and had also taken advice from all kinds of quasi-medical experts from various countries.

He narrates that in the summer of 1887, Vivekananda (whose real name was Narendranath Dutta) had fallen very ill due to overstrain and lack of food.

During this period, he also suffered from gallstones, and acute diarrhoea. Later, during the same summer, he came down with typhoid and problems in the urinary tract.

"Narendranath's abdominal pains were a source of great anxiety," Shankar says.

Shankar wonderfully chronicles the various medical problems Swami Vivekananda faced during his stint as a wandering monk in the country and across the world, and why he cut short his journey in Cairo, Egypt, to return to India.

It was to French operatic soprano Rosa Emma Calvet that Vivekandanda had declared in Egypt that he would die on July 4. "Swami Vivekananda's eyes filled with tears. He said he wanted to return to his country to die, to be with his gurubhais," Shankar wrote. The fateful evening of July 4, 1902, Vivekananda passed away following a third heart ttack, completing 39 years, five months and 24 days.

Milk in the benefits of doodh

Milk in the benefits of doodh

Did you know that milk is considered 'nature's wellness drink'? It is the first food which a baby is given to after birth. Milk is considered a complete food, and is a storehouse of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. We begin drinking it when we are young, but our intake decreases as we get older. Some people shy away from it because they fear that it will add too much fat to their diet. Others leave it out because they believe that they no longer need it. You are never too old to reap the rewards of drinking milk.

20 years ago, there were only two types of milk available, but today, a wide variety of milk is sold in the market, making it really easy to choose as per our requirements. Here are the different types:

Full cream:  This milk has 4-6% fat, and is packed with energy and nutrition.

Toned: This milk has 3% fat. It's an ideal choice for people in search of a nutritionally balanced diet that does not compromise on taste.

Double toned: This milk has 1.5% fat content.  It is a good option for all calorie conscious people who love the taste of milk but are wary of its cream content.

Skimmed: It has 0.5 % fat. In skimmed milk, the fat is removed yet it continues to supply all the nutrients milk has. It is extremely good for people who have high cholesterol or are on a low-fat diet.

Why do we need milk and dairy products?

Milk is the only source of calcium readily absorbed and also one of the rare sources of vitamin D hence is essential for strong bones. A glass of milk provides about 30 % DV (daily value) of calcium and 25% DV of vitamin D. Here are some more reasons to consume it:

Healthy bones and teeth: Calcium, phosphorous and protein are essential in building healthy bones and teeth. Milk and its products help in protecting against osteoporosis.

Blood pressure: People with high BP need to cut down their salt intake. Drinking 3 portions of milk and five portions of fruits and veggies on a daily basis will help in lowering high blood pressure. (Read: Tasty recipes to keep BP under control)

Heart disease: Studies have shown that consuming milk can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and calcium lowers the levels of bad cholesterol in the blood which is known to increase the risk of heart disease. (Read: Understanding heart disease)

Diabetes: Cutting down on refined sugars and carbs and drinking low-fat milk and its products can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. (Read: Healthy recipe for diabetics)

Osteoporosis: Osteoporosis is caused when there is a reduced intake of calcium and giving up milk can result in the same. Women and elderly people are more prone hence they should have milk to prevent bone loss. (Read: Osteoporosis – what you ought to know)

How much milk do we really need?

Children

A child up to two years of age should have at least three glasses of full cream milk. Children between 3-12 years should have three glasses of toned milk and adolescents can have two glasses of double toned milk.

Adults

Ideally, even adults should consume half litre of double toned milk or milk products daily. Since calcium requirement increases in elderly, they should consume about 750 ml of skimmed milk or milk products every day.

Hate milk? Try this formula

Some people aren't lactose intolerant but can't stand milk. Here's an easy formula that will help them substitute milk with other dairy products.

1glass of milk (250 ml) = 1 katori (250g) curd = 1 ½ cheese slice = 50g paneer   = 250-350 mg of calcium.

2 glasses of low-fat milk = 2 katori of low-fat curd = 3 slices of slim cheese = 100g of low-fat paneer.

So, if milk seems boring go ahead and have fruit yoghurts, curd smoothies, etc to meet your daily milk needs.

What if I cannot digest milk?

Lactose intolerance is a condition where the body cannot digest lactose, a carbohydrate found in milk. The enzyme called lactase which is present in the small intestine is responsible for breaking down lactose but when the body does not produce enough of this enzyme, the undigested lactose gets broken up by bacteria in the large intestine and causes gas, bloating, diarrhoea. People who are lactose intolerant can opt for whey water and other such alternatives. They might not be able to digest milk but depending on the level of their intolerance, they can digest a few dairy products like yoghurt or cheese.

Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case and the Special Investigation Team – Part Three

INSIDE STORY: Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case and the Special Investigation Team – Part Three

( February 10, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) The death convicts will be heaving a sigh of relief temporarily as their case has been adjourned owing to the pendency of a connected matter before Honourable Supreme Court of India.

Earlier it came to be mentioned that the death convicts have been languishing in jail for about13 years which is incorrect, for they are being incarcerated for about 21 years on end; a mistake has crept into it by oversight and therefore the number 13 may be correctly read as 21.

In view of the discussion already made in respect of the 4 photographs , one may safely arrive at a conclusion that there are no similarities or identical features of the persons who figure in the photographs. Those 4 photographs were not the only ones pertaining to Sivarasan who was said to be the master mind in executing the plan which had been alleged to have been hatched by LTTE.

The Chief Investigation officer had brought in yet another photograph which was found affixed on a driving license said to have been issued to one Sivaraj s/o S.Ramalingan and according to the version of the story propounded by the investigating officer, the said Sivarasan @ Raguvaran @ Packiyachandran had applied for driving license and obtained one. In this regard the attention of the readers are solicited to page No.70 of the Book Rajiv Kolai Vazhakku ( Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case) where a copy of driving license had come be inserted and an enlargement of that photograph is given below.

Although the facial features of the person figuring in this photograph is a bit blurred owing to enlargement yet this person is entirely a different person from the persons found in other 4 photographs. There is no knowing as to how the prosecution had introduced these photographs purporting to the photographs of Sivarasan @ Raguvaran @ Packiyanathan and it should have been thus that the prosecution had made the court to believe that the persons found in all the 4 photographs were one and same person and on the basis of fabricated evidence had facilitated in awarding the capital punishment. Anyone who on seeing the aforesaid photographs would certainly conclude that the persons appearing in them were different individual persons and there needs to possess no esoteric knowledge to come to such a conclusion. Sivarasan@ Raguvaran@ Packiyanathan need necessarily be not Sivaraj son of S.Ramalingam and as for the names themselves , Sivarasan and Sivaraj should be two different entities. These apparent dubitative evidence should have gone in favour of the accused persons in their acquittal. But that these apparent and obvious stark differences had escaped the notice and knowledge of the court is what grieves greatly the right thinking people and for the said reason the judgment of trial court needs to be revised in the interest of justice.

What have been stated in the earlier parts of this piece would settle at rest the proposition of fact that those 10 photographs were the only evidence with which the SIT had made a humble beginning of their investigation and we have also seen as to why those photographs were not credible piece of evidence and in reality those photographs were unreliable for any purpose inclusive of an attempt at proving the involvement of LTTE. The 6 other photographs have to be excluded in totality because the active and practical investigator Mr.K.Ragothaman himself would state that there were only 10 photographs which were the basis for initiation of the investigation and it was these 10 photographs from which prints were taken and then supplied to all other members attached to the investigation team.

The Special Investigation Team has to admit fairly that in the absence of negatives of those 10 photographs fresh negatives could have been created out of the positive prints.

A few more words need to be spoken of the photographer Haribabu. It may be remembered that it was once again the Hindu Newspaper which was alleged to have quoted the story that the father of the alleged photographer had staunchly and in categorical terms denied any involvement of his son in any of the affairs of the LTTE.

According to the decision arrived at by the Chief of the Special Investigation Team Mr.D.R.Karthikeyan , there were no obvious indication in the hut of Haribabu which would show any involvement with any terrorist group and further it was his categorical conclusion that Haribabu's house had already been cleaned of any evidence that might point to his involvement with LTTE.

The above statement stands in proof of the proposition that there being absolutely no evidence to show that the alleged photographer was one among the conspirators. But imputing and accusing him of conspiracy in assassinating Rajiv Gandhi will not be proper and such an allegation is, as we have seen thus far, should have been unfounded and baseless.

The Chief of the Investigating Team Mr.K.Ragothaman would claim that he had sent his team members to search for and salvage any evidence that might be found in the hut of Haribabu and in compliance of his direction some officers who were assisting him had been to the hut of Haribabu at Saidapet, Chennai, who after a laborious search had informed the chief Investigating officer in the following manner and what had transpired there according to him had been embodied by Mr.K.Ragothaman in his book Rajiv Gandhi Kolai Vazhakku at page No.43 fifth paragraph ,

" I have called and spoken to the officers who were sent to make a search the house of Haribabu. All of them spoke in unison and in categorical terms. Definitely there was nothing available in that house'.

His subordinates seemed to say the following, 'Sir. we have ransacked the entire house . If all the things that were available there were to be removed and sold would not fetch even Rs.1,000/-'

The point that has to noted attentively is that the Chief Investigating officer Mr.K.Ragothamman himself would reveal and admit in categorical terms that he himself had been to the hut of Haribabu at earlier point of time and that nothing had appeared unusual to his eyes in the hut and the following lines is what he had said in page No.43 at the sixth paragraph,"I too had been to the house earlier. To my eyes nothing appeared unusual. Even after searching the nook and cranny of the house there was no material that could point to the involvement. It seemed there was no chance of there being any evidence."

The unanimous version of both the Chief of Special the Investigation Team and the Chief of the Investigating officer was that there was absolutely no evidence whatsoever in incriminating Haribabu so as to indict him for the offence of conspiracy and collaboration in the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi and this was the position that existed till to the first week of June 1991.

The Special Investigation Team had not made any break thorough in the investigation of the case from 24.5.1991 till the first week of June 1991 as has been pointed out. There was not a whit of material evidence available except those 10 photographs which had been given by the Hindu News Paper and the said 10 photographs in themselves did not reveal any clue leading to the fixation of identity of the offenders.

It appears from the narration of the story that the Special Investigating Team which since having failed to get material evidence to implicate the LLTE had contrived to project a new twist in the trend of his story. The following passage is the crux of the narration.

'The Chief Investigation officer was said to have gone to the hut of Haribabu where there were apparent impecunious situation and the mother of Haribabu had come forward to get tea for them from a tea shop and that she had bundle of 100 rupees notes which had made him to suspect the complicity of Haribabu in the assassination but they had declined the offer and that before they did come away from Haribabu's hut Mr.K.Ragothaman had informed Haribabu's father saying that if he revealed the names of the persons with whom his son had kept contact then the Government would pay sumptuous award'.

The story flits as a sequential scenes in a novel. Subsequent to the aforesaid alleged incident, Mr.K.Ragothaman had continued to narrate in his book that the father of Haribabu had brought to him a camera stand and handed it over to him by apologizing that he had forgotten to hand it over to Mr.K.Ragothaman at the time of his earlier visit and therefore suspicious stance on the part of father of Haribau had promoted the Chief Investigating officer to direct other officers to make a thorough search in the hut of Haribabu and only then they say they had found letters, receipt and bills and one among the letters was a letter said to have been written by one Sundari who was a resident of Villupuram, to Haribabu and it was said that Sundari was the fiancé of Haribabu.

The allegations like possession of bundle of 100 rupees notes, return of camera stand and recovery of letters and bills seem to be farfetched and imaginary and there was no cohesiveness and consistency in the matters alleged in the book and Such unfounded allegation would not appeal to the mind of any one.

The weighing and considering the truth and veracity of the matters enumerated in the forgoing paragraphs are left to the decision of the readers.

to be continued….

Rajiv Gandhi assassination case and the Special Investigation Team ( Part 2 )

INSIDE STORY: Rajiv Gandhi assassination case and the Special Investigation Team ( Part 2 )

( February 02, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Head of Special Investigation Team, Mr.Karthikeyan would thank a top official in Tamil Nadu Forensic Science Laboratory for having sent the sealed negatives to Hindu News paper on the next morning and this is what he had stated in his book, ' there were a total of ten pictures. Yet the next morning a major part of the first of these ten photographs found its way to the Hindu front page, thanks to the top official at TNFSL'.

Can a high ranking officer like Mr.D.R.Kartikeyan be heard to say that the sealed negatives found their way to Hindu Newspaper? it is not so simple a matter that could be brushed aside and not taken note of . At any stretch of imagination, the pilferage of vital document cannot tend to be a matter for thanks giving. When a top official was said to have passed on such vital and only documentary evidence to the Hindu News paper then such an official, what ever his rank be or whatever position he happened to occupy, should not be pardoned and he should be punished in accordance with the provisions of law and it is a serious matter of divulging a secret which would have its ramification on and over investigation of the case. Mr.D.R. Karthikeyan had not chosen to reveal the name of the top official who had the audacity in giving away the material evidence to a third party and this aspect needs to be probed deeper. The vital and only documentary evidence should have passed hands only on some considerations and the nature of such a consideration has to be investigated.

It is also relevant to see what the Chief Investigating officer Mr.K.Ragothaman has got to say in respect of 'one Chinon camera which was collected from the scene of crime. He would state that 'there was nothing inside which would be any benefit'. He would continue to state the following words in his book, 'Since there was no facility to take prints at Sripermpadur it was taken to Sunguvar Chatram where too there was no facility for taking prints. It was being said that it was taken to Chennai'

Therefore the statement that the police photographer had taken the film canister to a local studio where exposed frames were cut and packed was highly false. Here, both the Head of the Special Investigation officer and the Chief investigating officer were speaking only hearsay in their books and therefore they were not competent to speak anything pertaining possession of the camera, cutting of the exposed film as though such events had happened in their presence and in the course of their investigation.

The picture appeared in by Hindu Newspaper' showed the bespectacled salvar kameez clad woman holding the sandal wood garland, flanked by party functionary Latha Kannan and her daughter Kokila Vani. The Kurta Pyjama clad man's portion in the photograph had been edited out and Dr.D.R.Karthikeyan had hastened to furnish reason for such editing. He was precluded from defending Hindu News Paper and he was incompetent to give reason for such editing and had he been fair enough he ought to have initiated appropriate legal action against the top official who had pilfered the negatives which was said to have been kept sealed.

The Chief Investigation officer Mr.K.Ragothaman himself would state that ' in the subsequent days that followed, the photograph which was destined to became famous would bring to mind a person clad in white Kurta pyjama. But there was not the white Kurta Pyjama clad person figuring in that photo which came to be published in the news paper. The person who was clad in white Kurta pyjama and who was standing a little away from the three women was removed.'

Pertaining the kurta pyjama clad person whose picture was not there in the photograph published by Hindu News paper, that kurta pyjama clad person need necessarily not be the persons whose photographs are given below. A cursory glance at the photographs indicate that they are not identical and one and same persons. The face of the person in the first photograph is elongated and his right ear lobe is protruding side ways and the left ear lobe is standing straight and the nose is also elongated ; the face of the person figuring in the 2nd photograph is short and further both the ear lobes are not prominent; his nose is shorter than the nose of the person appearing in the first photograph and the portion below the lips of both the persons found in the first two photographs do vary and in fact there are slight bulging on either side of the lips of the person appearing in the 2nd photograph. As for their eyes, left eye of the person on the first photograph appear to have been closed completely and right eye of the person figuring in the 2nd photograph is just squinting. In respect of the person appearing in the 3rd photograph his nose is stubby and the nostrils lifted a bit and they could be seen clearly. When the three photographs viewed from below their lip portion will definitely enable one to conclude that the persons appearing below are three different persons.

The picture of the dead person given below was said to be Sivarasan who was the master mind behind the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi. The person appearing there is definitely yet another person. It is said that Sivarasan had two alias Raguvaran and Pachiyachandran.

Now it is to be seen who was the person who had given the material for establishing the identity of Sivarasan alias Raghuvaran alias Packiachandran. D.R.Karthikeyan in his book 'Rajiv Gandhi Assassination' had categorically stated that the materials were supplied by Sri Lankan Government and the groups hostile to LTTE.

The following statements contained in his book would vouch for such a venture.

'From our intelligence agencies, we had two names of LTTE hit men David , Raghuvarman, who were suspected of having led the assault on Padmanabha and his EPRLF comrades in June 1990. But we did not have their photographs. And without photographs names were not much use.'( page 39)

'The features of the suspected assassin and the modus operandi did point to some link with LTTE and Colombo assured all help. At least a check could be made whether there were chances of the photographs of the suspected assassin and kurta pyjama clad man being identified of Tamil groups based in Colombo and hostile to the LTTE.( page 34)

In a book written by one Meena Agarwal under the caption 'Rajiv Gandhi' there was mention of statements made by Mr.D.R.Kartthikeyan and the following is his statement, "We Were able to collect many proofs from Sri lanka and other countries due to the 'letter rogatories' that had been issued by the Special Court of Chennai. From the proofs that we had been able to collect from Sri Lanka, we were able to confirm the identities of the many of the accused, which included Sivarassan, Murugan, Senthithiraraja, Kanak Sabapathi."( page 118)

The Chief investigating officer Mr.K.Ragothaman himself would state that there was an unexposed roll of film in the camera which came into their hands and that the exposed films were separately cut out and sent away for taking prints.

The Chief investigation officer Mr.K.Ragothaman who in his book written in Tamil under the name 'Rajiv Assassination case – Time to unravel the mystery which was published in the month of November 2009 by Kizhakku Pathippagam, Chennai had stated that 'on the 24th May the case into the hands of CBI. In the after noon of 24th May the team had registered a new case. But on the 23rd night the roll of film had reached the Hindu News paper, after taking prints of the films they were published in the 24th May issue of Hindu News paper.'

There is no knowing as to whether the cut film which was said to have been developed at TNFSL and which was kept sealed that was given to the Hindu News paper or the entirety of roll of colour film was given away as has been stated by him and the Chief Investigating officer had stated that he felt a profound shock and consternation and he would continue to state as to how the film first went to Hindu News paper before it reached the Special Investigation Team. The secret behind all these needs to be revealed by Mr.D.R.Karthikeyan to the people who have right to know the culprits who were privy to and behind the conspiracy to assassinate Rajiv Gandhi and the very trend of investigation in itself appear to be another conspiracy to shield the real conspirators and the assassins of Rajiv Gandhi.

Both the Head of the Special Investigation officer Mr.D.R. Karthikeyan and the Chief Investigating Mr.K.Ragothaman did speak in unison of the dubious nature of the photographs and that was why the Mr.D.R.Karthikeyan would state that 'the photographs published by the Hindu Newspaper before we or the crime Branch had access to the photographs, and even before the CBI registered the case, did create some consternation among the investigators'.

The Chief Investigating officer at page No.124 of his book had stated that the 10 photographs which were taken by Haribabu was the only vital evidence and that the very investigation was started on the basis of said photographic evidence and that he had been thinking of the mystery behind the pictures having gone to the office of Hindu News and their subsequent return and he had posed such questions like 'how it came to pass that the pictures had reached the office of Hindu News paper ? Whether any enquiry was done in this respect and what was the punishment given to the offenders? He also had felt disheartened to note that such a mistake was suppressed and forgotten in the furore.

The Chief Investigating officer Mr.K.Ragothaman had continued to state that 'on the same night 21.5.1991, a police constable had found the camera and it was given to Forensic Science unit which in turn had given it to Forensic Science Expert Dr.Chandrasekaran'.

The Chief Investigating officer had further opined that 'it was well known to the people in the Department as to the existence of close nexus or connection between Dr.Chandrasekaran and Hindu News paper office. Dr.Chandrasekar had reached Sriperumbadur in the car belonging to the press reporter attached to Hindu Newspaper. After getting the roll of film he had directly gone to the office of Hindu News paper where photographic prints were taken out of the film and only then it had been entrusted to CB CID.

The Chief investigating officer Mr.K.Ragothaman would say that the 10 historically important photographs among others which were taken by Haribabu had initially went to Hindu Newspaper and later they were printed by CB-CID and the photographs had been distributed to them and in such a photograph, they say that, they had seen the picture of Kurta pyjama clad person in a corner.

The Chief investigating officer Mr.K.Ragothaman would state that it was being said at Sriperumpadur that the colour roll of film which was removed from the camera was entrusted to Dr.P.Chandrasekar who had taken it away for taking prints.

The Chief Investigating officer was speaking of ten photographs said to have been taken by Haribabu and he had informed nothing about the 6 other photos said to have been taken by a photographer who accompanied a music troupe and it would be relevant if what Mr.D.R .Karthikeyan said is reproduced, "these ten photographs and six others taken by a photographer who had accompanied Shankar Ganesh music troupe were the only ones which were taken before the assassination; they were, therefore important from the investigators' point of view to find out whether some accomplice of the assassin were present at the scene.

We have seen the checkered carrier of the alleged the colour film. As could be seen from what had transpired thus far, the still photographs were the only documentary evidence available to fix the identity of the conspirators who were instrumental in assassinating Rajiv Gandhi. But the Head of Special Investigating team D.R. Karthikeyan would admit of there being of two separate videographers taking videos from the time the rally began.

Although the video cassettes were taken possession of they were not produced before court nor the contents were not analyzed for the only reason that the evidence contained in the video cassettes would destine to shatter their preconceived, biased and prejudiced approach and the video cassettes had been secreted away for the reasons best known to the Special Investigating team. Mr.D.R.Karthikeyan would maintain that the contents in the video cassettes had been accidently erased.

The Director of Tamil Nadu Forensic Science laboratory and CB- CID were at the scene of crime on the very night of bomb blast salvaging for material evidence and the alleged camera was said to have been collected by Inspector General of Police and the Video cassettes should have been collected in the manner and both the cassettes found their way to Intelligence Bureau, New Delhi as the alleged roll of film first went into the hands of Hindu News paper.

The Chief Investigating officer in chapter 30 of his book speaks in detail, 'The then Chief of Intelligence Bureau Mr.M.K.Narayanan had filed several documents before the Justice Verma Commission and one among the documents was a letter written by M.K.Narayanan to Prime Minister of India informing him that he had laid his hands on a video cassette purporting to be video recorded at Sriperumbadur and that he was working on it and that he would soon reveal the result. The Head of Intelligence of Bureau had not submitted the said video cassettes before the Justice Verma Commission and as a Chief investigating office he was very sure about it. If such a video cassette were to have been with the Team than it would have helped him a lot and no such video cassette ever did come to him. When he began the investigation there were no other material except the photographs taken by Haribabu and the team was groping in the dark and had the video cassettes been given to him it would have thrown some ray of light. Sivarasan and his team roaming about the rally ground and the persons with whom he was talking to would have been recorded in video cassette and the evidence as such would have immensely helped the team. From the investigation he came to know that Thanu along with Latha Kannan first went to speak with Latha priyakumar who had obtained the permission to garland and perhaps the video cassette would have provided and formed vital evidence as certain as the Nelli fruit in the palm. The Intelligence Bureau had suppressed the evidence in order to protect the family members of Maragatham Chandrasekar and by doing so it appeared like hiding a whole Bumpkin in a marsel of food.

The Chief Investigating Officer Mr.K.Ragothaman was making belatedly complaint or rather accusation against the Head of Special Investigation Team Mr.D.R.Karthikeyan alleging although he had sought permission to examine some certain persons it was declined.

Reverting to kurta pyjama clad person, the emigration Authorities had detained a Sri Lankan kurta pyjama clad person twice at the Air port, Chennai and it was only Mr.D.R.Kathikeyan who had readily hastened to release that man on those occasions and in fact there was no whisper about the particulars of that kurta pyjama clad person in his book. The identity of the enigmatical kurta pyjama clad person was kept a secret all along.

The evidence collected by one of the investigating officers who while returning home was lost to him and how shoddy the nature of investigation was!

To sum up, it is very apparent from the forgoing discussions that the film canister with undeveloped roll of colour film in it which was first laid hold of by Hindu News paper had been purportedly tampered and tailored to suit the scheming designs of the conspirators in the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi and therefore the contents cannot be relied upon for any purpose whatsoever inclusive of as photographic evidence before court and had the photographs already been marked in evidence and relied on by court for delivering the judgment then such a judgment necessarily needs a revision. Therefore the plea of the death convicts deserves to be heard. We have seen only a snippet of how careful the Special Investigating Team was in putting together different pieces to make a clear picture of the conspiracy and the roles of the all conspirators were brought to light!

Rajiv Gandhi Assassination & Special Investigation Team - Part I

Rajiv Gandhi Assassination & Special Investigation Team -

( January 31, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) Certain factual aspects have been constrained to be repeated for appreciation and excerpts from the passage from the books authored by the Head of the Special Investigation Team and the Chief Investigation officer are necessarily to be quoted verbatim and therefore the author craves the indulgence of the readers to bear with him.

The death row convicts in Rajiv Gandhi Assassination case are eagerly awaiting the impending result that would ensue in the Writ petition which is about to be heard before The Honourable High Court of Judicature at Madras at the end of this month and they are very much hopeful and expectant that their life would be saved and in reality, the 13 long years of incarceration in itself would tantamount to execution. A chunk of prime of their life has been truncated and made a waste and their plea is they are innocent of crime foisted against them.

One of the death row convicts Murugan wrote letters in serial and they have been published in Junior Vikaden Magazine and in one such a letter dt.2.11.2011 he has tried to raise a volley questions and doubts about various aspects of the case and he is sure about injustice having been done to him and one among the doubts or questions is the dubious nature and authenticity of the still photographs which have been relied upon by the Prosecution to fix the identity of the conspirators and actual executioners and the alleged confessional statement were made to be the basis for conviction and the Honourable Supreme Court ruled that confessional statement would implicate and drive home the offence against the co accused too and the translation of the letter dt.2.11.2011 has appeared in Srilankaguardian web site. It is worth while to read the letter which would purport to reveal as to how he was tortured and ultimately made to sign the statement which was already prepared by the investigating officers. (5th Oct 2011 issue, Junior Vikaden )

In the letter dt.2.11.2011, the first question which he raises is as to why the Special investigating team has failed to enquire into the identity of the person who was apparently pushing Thanu forward from behind with his or her palm of hand over her back as could be seen from the last photographs among the photographs said to have been taken by Haribabu ?

The second question posed by the death convict Murugan is that why the scene of offence was not preserved and protected from being disturbed and the escape of real culprits was facilitated as the roll of colour film had been laid hold by a press reporter which was said to have been retrieved later by the Head of the Special Investigation Team Mr.D.R.Karthikeyan?

The third question is the mystery behind the absence of 'Pottu'( thilak) mark on the forehead of Thanu in the photograph said to have been taken by Haribabu at the scene of blast and another photograph showing a woman said to be Thanu lying dead with Pottu' mark on her forehead?

Fourth question is why the hand bag found hung on the shoulder of Thanu was not at all recovered from the scene of crime nor any enquiry was made after the missing hand bag ?

Subsequent to the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi the Special Investigation Team had verified on 23.5.1991 from the records available at the General Hospital, Kanceepuram and they had ascertained that some one claiming to be the father of the alleged photographer Haribabu was said to have received the body and the body was cremated there at Kancheepuram in all haste. Therefore there arise suspicion and doubt in respect of the abrupt disappearance of the alleged corpse of Haribabu. It is to be remembered that it was only The Hindu News paper which for the first time had published the photograph of the alleged Haribabu.

There is no doubt and there cannot be one that whoever had conspired and assassinated Rajiv Gandhi should deserve the punishment and the perpetrators should not be shown any mercy but it sometimes so happens the death row convicts making persistent claim of their being innocent of the crime imputed and foisted on them and on such occasions there needs to be strict adherence to caution and circumspection in giving ear to their plea and there may not be mechanical disposal of the mercy petition too. In the humble opinion of this author the mercy pleas of Murugan, Santhan and Perrarivalan needs to be reconsidered when they have been languishing behind bar all these years and when they make a persistent claim of being innocent.

The Honourable judge of the Special Court had extolled the greatness of the Head of the Special Investigation Team Mr.D.R.Karthikeyan by heaping encomium on him that 'he had been the guiding light and in charge of the investigation, his devotion to duty, hard work, ability and honesty'.

The Special Court has spoken high of the other members of the team by eulogizing that the team had completed the investigation in a very scientific and well planned way and due to their unbiased and accurate investigation the people who committed this hideous crime had been punished.

The Special court had spoken in praise of the ability and hard work of the Chief investigation officer and other investigating officers of CBI.SIT and all other officers and workers.

The Honourable Supreme court had praised the Special Investigation Team by saying the complete investigation was done in a very careful manner, putting together different pieces to make a clear picture of the conspiracy and the roles of the all conspirators were brought to light.

The caliber and the capabilities on the part of the CBI cannot be under estimated but it cannot said that the members constituting the Special Investigation Team would not have approached the case without bias and prejudice especially in this case. Here , the Special Investigation Team seemed to have force fit wrong pieces and it had striven hard to show that the accused persons in the case had conspired together in murdering Rajiv Gandhi which plan was master minded by one Sivarasan.

One may tend to think about the significance of photographs which the death convict Murugan has spoken of. If one photograph would show Pottu ( thilak mark ) on the forehead of Thanu and other photograph would not show Pottu (thilak mark) on the forehead of Thanu then any prudent man will naturally come to doubt the authenticity and veracity of the contents of said photographs. The Chief Investigating officer Mr.K.Ragothaman would admit in his book of the presence of pottu ( thilak mark) on the forehead of Thanu.

Unfortunately, the snaps shot by one Haribabu was said to be dead and his body was cremated in a suspicious and hurried way at Kancheepuram .

The then Union Minister of State for Home Subodh Kant had informed that a special investigation team comprising of experts from the Intelligence Bureau, National Security Guards and Research wing ( RAW) had been sent to Madras and the team had taken up its work and the Minister would continue to inform that the forensic experts from these organizations had already begun investigation to establish the modus operandi and the type of explosives that had been used in the blast that killed Rajiv Gandhi. It is being said that the team comprised 70 police officers besides Mr.D.R.Karthikeyan the Head of Special Investigation Team.

The Police Station at Sripeumbadur had registered a criminal case under crime No.329/91 against unknown person and under sec 302 , 307, 320 of Indian Penal Code and Sec 3 of the Arms Act on the next day of the blast that was on 22.5.1991 and the local police had been investigating the case.

The CB- CID had taken been up investigating of the case and in the course of such investigation Dr.P.Chandrasekaran,the Director, Tamil Nadu Forensic Science Laboratory and his ream had visited the scene of crime and gathered first pieces of material evidence which gave clue to the ingenious explosive device.

"The Scientists of the Central Forensic Science laboratory, New Delhi and NSG's explosive expert joined the stream of scientists of Tamil Nadu Forensic Science laboratory in sweeping the blast site for material clues on 23rd May" and these are the exact words of D.R Karthikeyan and his colleague Radhavinodh Raju who had jointly authored a book under the caption 'Rajiv Gandhi Assassination.' ( page 23)

A Television Journalist Mr.Ramasundram would state that Government had deputed the Director of the Forensic laboratory in Chennai, Prof P. Chandrasekaran, to take up investigation and who had already left for the spot that same night and collected evidence'.

It would be appropriate if the exact words spoken by the aforesaid Television Journalist is quoted below for appreciation and the following are what he had stated,

" I called him the next morning and he told me that he had just returned from the site and will go to the office shortly. I went along and told him that Television net work were pressuring me to get the scoop on the assassination….. I placed the camera on the tripod, fixed a lapel mike on his coat and told him to narrate the story to the camera. As he was an expert in Forensic sciences, his words will certainly carry weight. I started filming. The professor then took out the LOTTO shoe that Rajiv Gandhi was wearing, I took shots of the shoe from different angles. Then he showed the kameez that Danu (human bomb) was wearing, next was the battery box with the fatal switch. He also narrated how the battery was switched on and the bomb blast mutilated Rajiv Gandhi's face. I recorded the whole narration which was the only clue to the bomb blast. Immediately I rushed the film to the network, I felt relieved that the deed was done."

It has to be taken note that the Professor had made reference only to " the battery box and the fatal switch". The prosecutors' case was that a 9 volt Golden Power battery was used in detonating RDX.

The learned senior Advocate Mr. S.Duraisamy who was conducting the case of the accused Nalini had raised the question of the identity of the person who had procured denim belt and the RDX and the place where RDX was purchased.

The Head of Special Investigation Team Mr.D.R.Karthikeyan wrote a book Rajiv Gandhi Assassination, Triumph of Truth, in the year 2004 and similarly K.Ragothaman, the Chief Investigating Officer had written a book, 'Rajiv Gandhi Assassination –Time to unravel the Mystery' in Nov, 2009. If any matter which contained in the aforesaid books were to be contrary to ones stated before the Special court or given in evidence before the Special Court then it would amount to having spoken false before court.

The Chief Investigating officer Mr.K.Raogthaman had mentioned at page No.19 of his book Rajiv Gandhi Assassination –Time to unravel the Mystery, that Dr.P.Chandrasekaran, Forensic Science Expert had been to the scene of crime and he had collected several pieces of evidence. It became known to him that the explosive material used was RDX. Iron pellets were removed the corpses and one 9 volt battery was recovered. The Forensic expert did not speak anything about recovering a 9 volt battery and in fact all he had mentioned was only recovery of a battery box.

Although the term 'battery' and 'cell' are often interchangeably used yet each connote rather a different meaning. When some electric cells placed in series or in parallel forms a battery and 'cell' is a single electric unit and what the professor salvaged from the ground was only a battery box so to house some electric cells and in fact there was no mention of having collected 9 volt battery. what is noteworthy at this juncture is the professor did not mention anything about the roll of colour film having been collected at the scene of crime. Mr.D.R.Karthikeyan would speak of recovery of some parts of 9 volt Golden power battery. Once again we have to rebut the allegation by saying that whatever the kind battery that was used it should have been reduced to smithereens owing to the tremendous impact and that too beyond identification and the proposition that parts of 9 volt battery were recovered was an impossibility. What would be inside a 9 volt battery –a close packing of mercury or cadmium compounds bound with zinc sheet or tin sheet.

The Television Journalist had continued to state that many networks and newspapers wanted to hear Professor's version and that later many foreign TV stations had used his material; even BBC had to depend on his material and many other newspapers abroad like LA Times, Toronto Star had extensively quoted the footage but he felt sad that the Forensic expert who wrote a book, 'The Untold Story of the Rajiv Gandhi Assassination' had failed to mention his covering of the event in that book.( Sulekha.blog- ramasundaram blog)

The Central Bureau of Investigation had registered a fresh Regular case No.9/91 Special crime branch, Chennai and on May 24th at about 1.30.P.M the Special Investigation Team officially had taken up Rajiv Gandhi Assassination case for investigation from the Tamil Nadu police.

The Forensic expert Mr.Chandaraekaran did not speak anything about the recovery of the Chinon camera from the scene of crime when he narrated to the media about the recovery of pieces of evidence on the very night of bomb blast as has been stated earlier.

The Head of the Special Investigation Team Mr.D.R.Karthikeyan who in his book captioned Rajiv Gandhi Assassination had stated that 'among the materials taken over by them from the state Crime Branch was the Chinon camera that had been picked up from the scene of crime under I.G. Ragavan's direction. The Camera had been taken by the Police photographer to a studio nearby to ascertain whether it contained clue. The Film being coloured one, it could not be developed at the local studio and the exposed portion was cut and packed and passed on to the police photographer. Due to the disturbance of law and order situation following the assassination it was not until the after noon of May 23rd that this portion of film, containing vital evidence, was taken to TNFSL and developed late in the evening. The First prints made from the exposed film were black and white and kept sealed at the lab'.

Any one with a rudimentary knowledge of photography may not accept the version of the story propounded by the Director Mr.D.R.Karthikeyan because an undeveloped colour film when once taken out of the film canister would not be of any use and even if cut film were to be developed the strip of film would show only a blank and further no one could come in agreement with to accept the statement like cutting of the exposed film from the roll of film in a local studio, packing of it and sending it for developing and therefore the alleged recovery of the film canister with roll of film in it, cutting of the exposed films from the film canister, then packing of the cut piece of film only smack of suspicion and doubt and there appears to be no truth in the statements. Further, before the exposed films in the film canister could be developed it is not known how one could see whether the pictures are exposed on to the film or not. Such averments appear like childish prattle.

Now reverting to the statements of Mr.D.R.Karthikeyan, the strip of film which was cut was developed at the Tamil Nadu Forensic Laboratory in the late evening of 23rd May and white and black prints were taken of the developed negatives and in reality such statement seem to be something unusual and farfetched.

To be continued tomorrow …

Rajiv Gandhi Assassination and Special Investigation Team- Part V

Rajiv Gandhi Assassination and Special Investigation Team- Part V

( December 9, 2012, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) It was alleged by Special Investigation Team that it was the Inspector General of police, Tamil Nadu, Mr.Ragavan who had taken possession of Chinon Camera CX from the site immediately after the bomb blast on the night of 21st May 1991 and it was further alleged that one Haribabu had used that Chinon CX camera in taking the iconical 10 shots. we have already heard the Chief investigation officer saying that the colour roll of film was taken out from the camera , taken to a studio near by, the exposed film was cut away, packed and sent to Chennai for developing the negative and what is to be taken note of is the roll of film was not sent directly to Forensic Department, Tamil Nadu.

Page No.142, The First Human Bomb by P.Chandra Sekharan

The camera which you see above is Chinon CX with which 10 shots were said to have been taken at the site and this model was manufactured by Chinon Industries, Japan and the industry had manufactured such model in or about 1974 and thereafter the company had stopped production of the above said model. The Forensic Expert Mr.P.Chandra Sekharan would say that the impugned camera Chinon Cx was fitted with a Super Takumar wide –angle lens ( No.3123927) made by the Asahi Optical Company, Japan with aperture-focal length '1.3/28'.

The Chinon camera used to be sold fitted with the company's own Chinon lens and especially this model camera came fitted with 55mm/1.4 lens and any other suitable lens could also be screw mounted. As you see this Camera has not in built electronic flash but there is hot shoe on the top of the camera so as to mount separate electronic flash. It is highly doubtful whether this camera could have been used in taking the 10 shots when more sophisticated models were available in the market and in use with photographers in the city during the material point of time and the case of the prosecution was that the alleged Photographer Haribabu had borrowed the said camera from his friend to take shots of the events and their case was the said Haribabu was working under his master Subha Sundaram who was said to be a well known photographer.

Now we have to see what the Chief of the Special Investigation Team Mr. D.R.Kartikeyan, the Chief Investigating officer Mr.K.Ragothaman and the Forensic Expert P.Chandrasekaran have got to say about the Chinon Cx Camera which we see above.

The version of Mr.Karthieyan-The Rajiv Gandhi Assasination , The investigation authored by D.R.Karthikeyan and Radhavinod Raju

'Haribabu focused the Chinon camera, that he had borrowed to cover this special event, and clicked his first picture of the evening.' 2nd paragraph page 15

Mr.M.Katthikeyan in the introductory pages would make a reference as to Mr.Ragul Gandhi who having said that he 'wanted to know the power of the lens of Haribabu's camera'

'Haribabu's camera, capturing the last moments of Rajiv Gandhi and others at the meeting, remained a mute witness atop its temporary owner's body once- alive body'( page 17, 3rd paragraph)

'Ragavan directed the police man nearby to pick up the Chinon camera. Page 17-18

'Among the materials taken over by us from the State Crime Branch was the Chinon Camera that had been picked up from the scene of crime under IG Raghavan's directions. The camera had been taken by the police photographer to a studio nearby to ascertain whether it contained clues. The film being a coloured one, it could not be developed at the local studio and the exposed portion of the film was cut and packed and passed on the police photographer. It was not until the afternoon of May 23 that this portion of film, containing vital evidence , was taken to TNFSL and developed late in the evening. The first prints made from the exposed film were in black and white and were kept sealed at the lab; there were a total of ten pictures. Yet the next morning, a major part of the first of these ten photographs found its way to The Hindu's front page, thanks to a top official at TNFSL'...page 25

'The photograph published by The Hindu before we or the crime Branch had access to the photographs, and even before the CBI registered the case, did create some consternation among the investigators' .page 25

'We proceeded to take possession of the camera and ten developed negatives that formed the most important evidence.' Page 26

'These ten photographers , and six others taken by a photographer who had accompanied Shankar Ganesh's music troupe were the only ones to be taken before the assassination;....' page 26

'After The Hindu published the first photograph of Haribabu, a journalist got in touch with us and expressed his doubts about a kurta pyjama clad man as a business partner of another mutually known free lance photo journalist. The next day the journalist called the photojournalist, who was supposed to be the kurta pyjama clad man's business partner, and inquired about the latter. The photojournalist acknowledged that Haribabu had borrowed his Chinon camera but as to the kurta pyjama clad man, he knew nothing. This bothered the journalist, especially after the LTTE was speculated to be among the prime suspects in the assassination. He knew Haribabu was a ward of the Chennai based Subha Sundaram, who was known to have close links with the LTTE.'

'Subha Sundaram , a well –known photojournalist, was a strong supporter of the LTTE. It was in his studio that LTTE master propagandist Baby Subramaniam attracted a young flock of Indian men. Subha Sundaram had paid a brief visit to Jaffna in the first half of 1990 and met the Tiger leader and was politically well connected. Later during investigation, the SIT unearthed the level of involvement Sundaram had with LTTE activities in general and the Rajiv Gandhi assassination in particulars' page 27

Obviously , the report was referring to the photographs published on May 24 in The Hindu in which the salwar kameez clad girl holding the sandal garland is seen flanked by a mother and daughter. This was a scoop by The Hindu.

'On May 20, Bhagyanathan , Arivu, Murugan, Nalini and Haribabu met Sivarasan in Bhagyanathan's house. Kodak film roll was given to Haribabu for taking photographs and Sivarasan gave them further instructions on their plan for the next day when Rajiv Gandhi was to address the meeting at Sriperumbadur'

The version propounded by Forensic Expert -The First Human Bomb by P.Chandrasekaran

I scrutinized the photographs and one of the photographs showed the same object that I had noticed in the news paper. I wondered why we did not locate this object in the scene. To check whether it was lying at the blast site when our team reached there. I made a slow run of the video we had made before we actually began our combing search. I could not locate this object in the video obviously this important object was picked up by some one in the interval, perhaps when the corpses were cleared.' Page 49

'When I was examining the bodies at the morgue , one of them was identified as that of Haribabu, a free lance photographer. Many had reported to have seen this Haribabu taking photographs of the final moments of Rajiv Gandhi at close quarters. The object that I had noticed and that we failed to locate was a camera! The camera , as I had noticed from the news paper, was trapped safely between two dead bodies, one of them identified as that of the photographer Haribabu himself and the other being that of a girl later identified as Kokila . I guessed that this camera must be none other than the one with which Haribabu was seen by many, clicking photographs until he was killed in the blast.

' I could n't get any information about the camera from the morgue either. Discouraged but determined to somehow get hold of Haribabu's camera. I came back to the blast site where my colleagues were waiting with the materials collected on the second day.'

'When I reached the lab, a great surprise awaited me. Watson placed before me a set of ten photographs. He told me that the police photographer attached to the Kancheepuram District police officer had come to our lab an hour ago and brought with him a 35 mm exposed colour roll film.... The police photographer wanted the film to be developed and prints made immediately in our colour lab. He told Watson that the police officers of the State Crime Branch wanted to see the results immediately. Watson had entrusted the job to our forensic photographer'.

'Removal of the camera from the scene was gross violation of basic crime scene ethics- and my last guess would have been that a law enforcement officer would have been responsible!

'My forensic photographer developed the roll film and found that ten frames were exposed. He made two sets of enlargements of all the ten exposures. He returned the colour negative roll along with one set of enlargements to the police photographer. Prudently my forensic photographer retained the other set and gave it to Watson to be shown to me.'

'Watson said that Praksh Swamy from The Hindu was right there in our lounge room waiting to meet me. His patience in waiting for me up till that late hour rewarded him with this crucial news break. He was ecstatic as he collected the print and rushed to his office. The Hindu faithfully carried the photograph along with the break-through news in its issue who killed Rajiv Gandhi' .-page 53

'But where was the camera? The mystery was solved the next day when my forensic photographer met me along with his police counterpart. Vardarajan, the police photographer was the first to find the camera lying between the dead bodies and to take a photographic of the scene as the press photographers also followed suit. When the bodies were removed to the morgue, the camera was picked up from the scene by Ragavan, the inspector General of Police. He had then entrusted the camera to the police photographer to be taken to a nearby studio to get the film removed, developed and prints made. The local studio , having no facilities to develop colour films, was a no –go, as the film was a colour roll. The photographer could n't get the film developed anywhere else in the city since all the major photo shops had downed shutters due to the widespread riots over the next two days. That's why the police photographer brought the film to my department where we had a well equipped colour laboratory'.

'I released to the press the photograph of Dhanu with a garland in her hand and it was first published in the Hindu on May 24, 1991.The Hindu ' also published Sivarasan's photograph on May 29 and the other newspapers carried them on May 30'. page 170

'One of the useful findings of the SIT during their investigation was that the LTTE typically records all its operations, and in this case had hired a Chennai –based photographer and sympathizer S.Haribabu, to document Rajiv Gandhi's killings. But, unfortunately for LTTE and fortunately for SIT, they had not anticipated one disastrous error. Haribabu, while photographing the sequences strayed too close to the assassin Dhanu and died in the explosion. Haribabu was probably not aware of the impending explosion. The ten photographs he had clicked in is Chinon camera had survived.

..... The camera with the loaded film ought to have been handed over to me at the crime scene itself. But the film was removed from the camera and brought to me on 23rd May ,1991, while the camera was delivered to me only on 30th May 1991.'

The version of K.Ragothaman -Story of Rajiv Gandhi Assassination by M.Ragothaman

'Of the press reporters and photographers who had gone to Poonthamalli, one of the Photographers was one Thelkadi Ramamurthy who knew news of the death of Haribabu. He knew well Haribabu and his master Subha Sundaram. Subha Sundaram had contacted Thelkadi Ramamurthy through telephone at the police station'. page 39

'On informing the death of Haribabu , the first reaction from Subha Sundaram was he who said that let Haribabu be gone, first the camera should be recovered.' page 39

'It was first a shock to Thelkadi Ramamurthy. Subha Sundaram having continued to speak asked Thelkadi Ramamurthy thus, 'See, if you could collect the camera? It is an invaluable property. It will yield millions in profit. What do you say?' -page 39

'When CBI was inquiring the press reporters and photographers who were at the site, the Chief of Special Investigation team was examining Thelkadi Ramaurthy. The information that was revealed by Thelkadi Ramaurthy was about Subha Sundaram which was terrifying and shocking one. Thelkadi Ramaurthy said that he had refused to budge in to Subha Sundaram's demand and he had abruptly stopped communicating with him over phone. After examining Thelkadi Ramamurthy Chief of Special Investigation Team Mr.D.R. Karthikeyan had directed Mr.K.Ragothaman to subject Subha Sundaram to a full enquiry'. page 39

'Inside the camera which came into our hands contained only unexposed film roll only. Its exposed frames were cut separately and sent for taking prints.'

Mere reading of the versions of the statements of the officers of Special investigation Team and the Forensic expert, Tamil Nadu Forensic Unit would give one to understand that it was Inspector General of Police Mr.G.Ragavan who had directed a police Constable to take possession of the impugned camera immediately after the bomb blast and thus the camera was said to be in the hands of state police who had begun their investigation soon after the blast which killed Rajiv Gandhi and some others and CBI took up the investigation only on May 24 at about 1.30 pm from State police and relevant papers and case properties that were recovered at the site were handed over to CBI.

Page No.142, The First Human Bomb

by P.Chandra Sekharan

So for the camera was concerned, according to the Chief investigation officer K.Ragothaman , the team had laid their hand on the camera and the unexposed roll of colour film which was inside the camera only on 24.5.1991 at about 1.30 Pm. Quite obviously The Hindu News paper had published the first frame starting with 0 in its issue dt. 24.5.1991 and therefore some negative colour films which were collected from the other photographers and negatives prepared from video cassettes sans the first frame starting with 0, should have reached the hands of Hindu News paper and that should have been what had happened in all probability. No body was certain as to where the impugned camera and the colour roll of film were all along and the Mr.D.R.Karthikeyan would state that black and white photos were taken from the colour negative film which were then kept in sealed cover. In all, it should be said that there was suspicion and doubts hovering over the camera which was said to have been lying over the corpse of Haribabu. It was their stand that only the exposed frames were cut at a local studio but there could not be any means of knowing as to how many frames were exposed in the roll and the Forensic Expert would say that roll film was given for developing on the evening of 23rd May and these statements appear to be untrustworthy.

Pertaining to the Chinon Camera CX, the Forensic Expert would say that the Camera was retrieved unscathed as it was found trapped between the corpses and the picture above shows that a camera is just lying on the corpse. Supposing were the photographer Haribabu to have clued his eye to the view finder and focused at the scene at time of actual explosion then certainly the Chinon CX Camera should have borne the brunt of the explosion and as the Forensic Expert himself had stated that as the onward rush of gases was at a speed of 7000 miles per hour, the effect of the blast with gases and pellets would have smashed it to pieces and further there would not have been any chance of survival of the colour roll of film inside the camera and here despite all the roll of film was said to have emerge undamaged and in all probability the version ventured by Forensic Expert should be farfetched; such statement was a pigment of his imagination; there was mala fide intention on his part and the Forensic Expert could not be heard to say that the camera was caught in between the bodies nor such a proposition could be stomached by any one with a little knowledge of photography and use of cameras. Further the picture shows the camera was one with out an in built electronic flash and neither of the investigating officers nor the Forensic Expert ever did say anything about the conspicuous absence of an in built electronic flash nor of the absence of separate mountable electronic flash. The investigation Team and investigation officers are bound to answer to this discrepancy or anomaly and they must explain how the alleged Photographer Haribabu had taken photos with the camera as such and therefore their investigation should be a tainted one. What the author of this article come to perceive is that the impugned Camera was not at all used in taking photos and the allegation of use of the said camera in taking those 10 photos sequentially was unfounded and baseless and saying so should only be a misnomer.

Page No.119, The First Human Bomb

by P.Chandra Sekharan

The Special investigation team was trying to fabricate evidence so as to present false evidence before court so as to procure conviction for a capital offence which were foisted against the accused persons in the case and the TADA Act had extended all protection and cover to their activities and it accorded all freedom to fabricate evidence and thus they were emboldened to go to any extent and their activities were destined to be unquestionable by any one and they had hoodwinked the Honourable court into believing that the photographic evidence which they had presented before the court was credible and trust worthy. The Chief of Special investigation Team Mr.D.R.Karthikeyan had stated that it was Sivarasan who had given Kodak colour Film to cover the programme and it was highly farcical on is his part to have said so and such statement was absurd, for a professional Photographer knew pretty well what kind of film he should use in taking photos for the occasion and the 10 shots spoken of in unison and oft repeated and reiterated as ones taken by Haribabu were not taken originally with Kodak film in Chinon CX Camera.

The theory that Haribabu having taken 10 snapshots sequentially which was propounded by the Special Investigation Team and the Forensic Expert was a conspiracy hatched by an hierarchy of conspirators and the Forensic Expert was a greater conspirator in the venture and even to this day there is no knowing of what happened to the video Cassette which was taken to New Delhi and the video cassettes seen by the team were only edited versions. The Special Investigation Team knew absolutely well that the Video cassette which was with the Chief of Intelligence Bureau contained vital information and in order to shied some one else its availability was suppressed from being utilized for effective investigation and the Chief of Investigation Team , the Chief of investigating officer and the Chief of erstwhile Intelligence Bureau were equally guilty of suppression of evidence which were to have been produced in the course of investigation then such an evidence would have tilted the trend of the prosecution case and in actuality they should all be prosecuted for suppression of evidence and for producing false evidence before court of law and we will continue with our exposition of the Kodak Colour Film which was said to have been given to Haribabu and the filmstrip which was alleged to have contained 10 shots wherein lies the falsity of entire prosecution case.

Home remedies: Herbs for a healthy heart

Home remedies: Herbs for a healthy heart

Beating about 1,00,000 times every day, pumping out about 2,000 gallons of blood through blood vessels that together make up a distance of around 60,000 miles – those are some of the characteristics of the human heart when it's at its peak. Any problem that affects the pumping ability of the heart is likely to cause it to work even harder; when this happens, it paves the way for heart disease that is potentially life-threatening.

So, it's important to ensure your heart stays healthy through regular exercise and by eating the right type of food. Several herbs also promote heart health and you would do well to consider adding them to your diet.

 Garlic (Lahsun)

One of India's wonder plants, garlic has a host of medicinal properties that make it a truly miraculous herb. Studies have found that a single clove of garlic consumed every day can help to reduce the production of 'bad' LDL cholesterol, raise the production of 'good' HDL cholesterol and also keep blood pressure within normal limits. Some researchers have also found that people who are regular consumers of garlic are more likely to have better blood circulation and lesser chances of harmful blood platelet aggregation. Read about the health benefits of garlic.

Cayenne (Lal Mirch)

You probably use cayenne to spice up your curries but did you know that it's also good for the heart? This spice contains a substance called capsaicin that has been shown to improve the elasticity of the blood vessels, helping them stay healthy. More importantly, it reduces the chances of blood clot formation and also lowers levels of LDL cholesterol. Overall, cayenne improves the functioning of the cardiovascular system and keeps blood pressure within the normal range.

Ginger (Adrak)

Although it's best known for its digestive and anti-flatulent properties, ginger is increasingly gaining recognition as a herb that promotes heart health. Studies have shown that ginger is capable of preventing formation of clots, improving blood circulation and lowering LDL cholesterol levels. In fact, certain laboratory studies have found ginger to be more effective than the drug aspirin as a blood clot preventer. Read about the health benefits of ginger.

Green Tea

Green tea is prepared from unfermented tea leaves that have a slight bitter flavour. When compared to black tea, green tea is rich in an antioxidant substance called epigallo catechin gallate. This antioxidant has been found to improve the health of the cells that form the innermost lining of the blood vessels and the heart. Studies have also shown that green tea reduces the formation of 'bad' cholesterol and prevents rise in blood pressure. Regular consumption of about 3 to 4 cups of green tea per day is believed to keep the heart and blood vessels in good shape, and can help you cut down on the risks of developing heart disease. Read about the health benefits of green tea.

 Arjuna Bark (Kaugach)

The bark of the Arjuna tree contains several important chemical constituents such as tannins, triterpenoid saponins and flavonoids and these have been found to have a cardio-protective action. According to Ayurveda, Arjuna is said to be a strong cardiotonic drug. Now, researchers are finding that extracts from Arjuna bark can act as well as nitroglycerine during an angina attack; they also help to lower LDL cholesterol, raise HDL cholesterol and reduce blood pressure. A small bark piece can be soaked in water overnight and then boiled in the morning to yield a decoction. The same bark piece can be dried and used for three consecutive days. Drinking this decoction regularly will help to maintain a healthy heart function.

(Guggulu or Guggul) Commiphora wightii

Since ancient times, Guggul has been used in Ayurveda for its action against obesity and arthritis and to improve heart function. Research shows that the resin of the guggul tree contains ketonic steroid compounds called guggulsterones and these have the ability to reduce the cholesterol-containing plaque that builds on the inner walls of the arteries. Guggul also helps to increase the metabolic rate of the body and this is useful for weight loss, which in turn ensures a healthy heart. Laboratory studies have shown that Guggul can reduce LDL cholesterol, raise HDL cholesterol and reduce the tendency of platelet aggregation and therefore, it is an important natural remedy to prevent coronary artery disease. According to Ayurveda, it's not administered along but is prescribed in combination along with other herbs in the form of Kaishore Guggul, Yogaraja Guggul or Triphala Guggul.

An important point to be considered here is that remedies such as garlic, cayenne, ginger and green tea can be made a part of your regular diet; however, when it comes to using Arjuna or Guggul, it is best to take the advice of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner before you begin. Use these herbs in combination with a nutritious diet and appropriate exercise and keep your stress levels low and you are sure to have a healthy heart that stays vibrant and healthy for many years to come.

How to prevent child sex abuse – tips for parents

How to prevent child sex abuse – tips for parents

by Gayatri Ayyer

In the last article we talked about how child sex abuse is not as uncommon as we think it is. We also talked about what constitutes child sex abuse and how to spot it. Below are some important guidelines parents, guardian and caretakers should follow to protect their children from CSA:

The typical advice 'Don't talk to strangers' doesn't apply in this case. Most sexual abusers are known to their victims.
Do not instruct children to give hugs and kisses to relatives and friends. Let them express affection on their own terms.
Observe if the child is reluctant or fearful of approaching any family member or relative or known person. There could be a reason for such behaviour.
Teach your children that their bodies are their own. That it is OK to say they do not want a hug or that certain kinds of contact make them uncomfortable.
Teach your children basic sexual education. Teach them that no one should touch the 'private' parts of their body. A health professional can also help to communicate sex education to children if parents are uncomfortable doing so.
The concept of 'good touch, bad touch' should be taught to children at home and school. There are various books and other multi-media materials available for the same.*
Develop strong communication skills with your children. Encourage them to ask questions and talk about their experiences. For example, make it a habit to share your daily activities with child, encouraging the child to do the same. This makes it easier for the child to talk to the parent about any inappropriate touch or behaviour.
Explain the importance of reporting abuse to you or another trusted adult.
Teach your children that sexual advances from older children and adults are wrong and against the law. Give them the confidence to assert themselves against any adult who attempts to abuse them. If that doesn't work, then the child should remove himself or herself from the situation if possible or bring it to the notice of others in their surroundings.
Make an effort to know children's friends and their families. Also know people in the child's surrounding like bus drivers, school staff, care-givers, day care staff, servants, maids, etc.
When hiring maids, servants, drivers for your family, ensure that they have valid ID proof and are registered at your nearest Police Station.
It is critical to provide adequate supervision for your children and only leave them in the care of individuals whom you deem safe.
Carefully monitor child safety in situations where older youth or adolescents supervise younger children.
Ensure that at least two adults supervise children at all times – it lessens the chance for an abuse situation developing.
Instruct your child to never get into a car with anyone or accept food or gifts from anyone without your permission and supervision.
It is important to remember that physical force is often not necessary to engage a child in sexual activity. Children are trusting and dependent and will often do what is asked of them to gain approval and love or for getting gifts.
Spread awareness about child sexual abuse by arranging for knowledgeable guest speakers to present to your organizations or groups. Encourage your local school and PTAs to establish programs to educate both teachers and students about the problem.

10 Shocking Health Benefits of Beer..

10 Shocking Health Benefits of Beer..

by priyasarangapan
New Tamil Jokes - Penmai.comToday, 01:41

Longer Life

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, in a 2005 review of 50 case studies, has revealed that generally, moderate beer drinker lives longer. Since one or two drinks a day, lowers the rate of heart diseases, strokes and diabetes, the study estimates that this prevents thousands of deaths in a year. These benefits are applicable throughout the world, as an earlier study in Europe believed that if the Europeans stopped drinking, the life expectancy might come down by at least two years.

Lowers Blood Pressure

Till recently only various types of wine was believed to be good for the health of your heart. But now studies reveal that beer might be good too, if not better. One Harvard study of many women revealed that those who had moderate quantities had reduced risk of developing high blood pressure, as compared to women who consumed wine or whisky. This is a significant benefit as increase in blood pressure might lead to heart attacks.

Reduce Risk of Diabetes

A Harvard research study found that moderate intake of beer reduced the risk of type 2 diabetes, by 25 percent. When around 38,000 men who rarely drank, increased their intake of either beer or any other alcoholic drink, to one or two drinks daily, this fact came to light. But if they drank more daily, this benefit was not seen. The studies found that moderate beer drinkers were protected against diabetes, because the alcohol increased their insulin sensitivity.

Guarding Against Stroke

The Harvard Schools of Public Health conducted a research which revealed that very moderate quantity of alcohol especially beer, can prevent strokes. Beer does not allow the blood clots, which clog the arteries, to form. So there are no blockages preventing the flow of blood. The blood flow is thus smooth not only to the heart but also to the brain and the neck. Thus common strokes like the ischemic strokes are prevented. Beer also reduces the risk of stroke by thinning the blood.

Boost Vitamin Levels

It has been found by a study conducted by Dutch researchers at TNO Nutrition and Food Research Institute, that beer increases Vitamin levels in the system. Beer drinking participants were found to have higher levels of B6 vitamin in their blood, as compared to non drinking participants. The levels were nearly twice as much as compared to wine drinkers. Beer also is said to contain Vitamin B12, folic acid, panthothenic acid, and riboflavin. Beer is also rich in silicon, a nutrient that is said to help strengthen bones.

Reduced Cancer Risks

When meat is pan fried it produces carcinogens more specifically heterocyclic amines, which are cancer causing. A study conducted in Portugal revealed that marinating such a steak in beer for some time eliminates almost 70 percent of these cancer causing agents. Scientists also discovered that wine and beer have the same level of antioxidants. But these antioxidants vary as the flavonoids found in grapes and hops are very different. So moderate drinking reduces cancer risks to a large extent.

Boosting Brain Health

Various studies have shown that a mug of beer daily may help prevent Alzheimer's and other brain related diseases. A study conducted in 2005 which tracked the health condition of nearly 10,000 women, revealed that those who consumed one drink a day reduced the risk of showing weak mental ability by nearly 20 percent, in comparison to those who did not drink at all. It was also found that these older women, scored much better on an average, on tests of mental skills, almost behaving 18 months 'younger' as compared to the non drinkers.

Healthier Kidneys

One study conducted in Finland on beer and other hard drinks, revealed that the consumption of a big mug beer daily, considerably lowered the occurrence of having kidney stones by a significant percentage. It could be that beer's high level of water content forced the kidneys to work to capacity and clear them out regularly. Dehydration, which causes the kidneys to become sluggish and increase the chances of getting kidney stones, is prevented by intake of beer regularly. It could also be that the hops in the beer reduced the leeching of calcium present in the bones. Since the calcium if leeched in this way could possibly end up as kidneys stones.

A Stronger Heart

In 2011 a review of earlier studies conducted by Italy's Foundazion di Ricercar e Cura showed that having a pint of beer daily, reduced the risk of heart diseases by nearly 31 percent. This study involved around 200,000 people or even more and so can be trusted to be realistic. But it was also found that the risk of heart problems increased in those who consumed large quantity of alcohol, irrespective of whether it is wine, beer or any other spirit. Moderate drinking has proved to reduce, the occurrence of heart attacks. It has also decreased the number of people dying due to heart related disease by a good percentage, according to more than 100 case studies.

Stronger Bones

It is believed that beer generally has a good amount of silicon which is directly related to the health bones. In a study conducted by Tufts University and other centers, it was found that older men and women, who had beer or wine, daily, had better bone density. But increasing the drinks to above two daily, made them prone to bone fractures. A study on 100 different types of beers in 2010 identified that the pale ale, had the best bone buildings benefits, as this brew was the richest in silicon. The light lagers and the beers that did not contain alcohol were found to contain the least amount of silicon.

My penis size is 5 inches. Will it satisfy my wife? (Sex query of the ...Today,

Since time immemorial, the legendary potato has been a victim of misunderstanding. The diet-driven and health-crazy society of the modern era, points out how potato is not at all recommended in one's diet. Some ill-informed fitness fanatics have failed to understand its true worth; i.e. a highly nutritious vegetable which when prepared and eaten in the right way, tends to help more often than hurt.

Read on as we peel back the truth about the recommended amount, nutritional composition and advantages of the goodness of potatoes.

Recommended amount of potatoes

On an average, the recommended daily amount is about 40g of potato. Though this may vary slightly depending on the kind of diet one is following.

Nutritional composition (for 100g potatoes)

Five reasons to eat potatoes

Ishi Khosla, Clinical Nutritionist and founder of www.theweightmonitor.com, opines that contrary to the popular belief, this starchy root vegetable is not taboo for diabetics and weight watchers. Hereunder, she explains the top five benefits of potatoes:

1. Potatoes are highly nutritious and energy-rich in nature: Potato is rich in complex carbohydrates (starch). It is one of the easiest types of starches to assimilate and contains two and half times less carbohydrate content than the same weight of bread.  Potatoes also provide some small amounts of minerals, B group vitamins, beta-carotene (an antioxidant and vitamin), vitamin C, and high quality proteins. The protein content is about 7%.  They are rich in certain essential amino acids (building blocks of proteins) which cannot be made by the body like glutamine, arginine.

2. Potatoes in nature are not full of fat: The reputation of potatoes as fattening comes from the way they are usually cooked. It is the fat that they are cooked in (gravy or fried) or added at the table in the form of butter of cream, that is the real culprit.

3. Eating potatoes can help prevent high blood pressure problems: Potatoes are also a good source of potassium even more than bananas with almost negligible sodium, making it useful for hypertension (high blood pressure). Its glycemic index (ability to raise blood sugar levels) is less than bread/rice, which makes it a permissible food for diabetics, contrary to popular belief.  It is best taken with a meal within caloric requirements. (Read: Herbal remedies for hypertension)

4. Traditional medicine values the juice of raw potatoes: It helps in the treatment of digestive problems – indigestion, colic, gastritis, ulcers, liver disorders, gall stones, constipation and as an antacid.

5. Potatoes are a good source of vitamin C, B6, iron and Vitamin: They are also great antioxidants as they repair cells in the body and prevent cellular damage. (Read: What are antioxidants?)

How to eat potatoes in a healthy way

Now that you know the many benefits of this humble vegetable, let's take a look at the various ways it can be eaten healthily. According to Rakhee Todankar, Nutritionist at Gold's Gym India, the healthiest ways to consume potato are:

Potatoes are best had boiled, steamed, grilled, roasted, and baked. Thus, potatoes can be cooked without butter or oil and mixed with other vegetables.
It is better to sauté them dry with spices and herbs and cook with a little bit of water.
It is always advisable to retain its skins as they contain fibre, flavonoids and other nutrients. When cooking potatoes, go for low-fat, low-sodium, and low-calorie toppings.
So instead of cutting them out of your meals, eat potatoes in a healthy way. Chuck the fries and wedges and opt for a sautéed or grilled version and reap in its various benefits.
