India looks to retain top spot

India looks to retain top spot

Latest Indian News

A dominant force in One-day cricket, India would look to retain its top spot in the rankings when they clash with a relatively inexperienced Australian side in a seven-match series, beginning in Pune on Sunday.
India has enjoyed exceptional results in One-day format this year. Except losing a three-match series to Pakistan at the start of 2013, the world champion side has had tremendous success, winning series after series.

The hosts had whitewashed Australia 4-0 in the February-March Test series and avenging that loss would be a herculean task for the visitors, who have come without inspiring skipper Michael Clarke even as their batsmen gave a good account of themselves in the one-off Twenty20 in Rajkot.

Australia did beat England in ODIs post their Ashes debacle but India is a tough nut to crack in home conditions.

And the visitors have got a fair idea about the task ahead after failing to defend a 200-plus total in Rajkot.

The Australian attack was subdued by the Indian batsmen, specially the comeback-man Yuvraj Singh, who took the game away from them with his blitzy 35-ball 77.

The left-hander has always been a vital cog in India's middle-order and the way he batted in his first game, Australia would be wary of him.

The Australians lack an effective spinner in their attack hence the pacemen need to come up with something very special to stop the rampaging Indian batting line up.

Bowling would be a little worry for Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni also as paceman Ishant Sharma and spinner R Aswhin were carted around by the Australians in T20.

Ashwin usually is a reliable weapon but he bled 41 runs in his two overs and Sharma conceded 52 in his four, forcing introduction of part-timer Virat Kohli in the attack.

The saving grace was Bhuvaneshwar Kumar and R Vinay Kumar, who picked up three wickets apiece. Left arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja bowled very effectively with his flatter trajectory.

Luckily for the Indians, barring a stroke-filled 89 from 52 balls by opener Aaron Finch, other Aussie batsmen could not capitalise fully on the poor Indian bowling.

The Aussies would require their batsmen to stay longer at the crease and make good starts count in the 50-over game.

They certainly would expect better contributions than single digit scores that they fell for from captain Bailey and key all rounder Shane Watson.

Watson, who is the most experienced player in the side and also knows conditions well, flopped in bowling also and he needs to fire on both fronts if Australia are to succeed and win the series.

Even though the matches commence one hour earlier than is the custom in India, the team bowling second would obviously have to factor in the dew fall which makes the ball skid off the track and trouble the spinners from having a firmer grip.

This game is the first ODI to be played at the newly built Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium that became an international venue last year when India and England clashed in a T20 International.

The fact that India have won the last two ODIs played at home against Australia in October 2010 and March 2011 (World Cup quarter final) also provides an indication of who, between the two teams currently, holds the edge in these conditions.

Teams (from):

India: M S Dhoni (C), Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Ishant Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, R Vinay Kumar, Amit Mishra, Jaydev Unadkat and Mohd. Shami.

Australia: George Bailey (C), Nathan Coulter-Nile, Xavier Doherty, James Faulkner, Callum Ferguson, Aaron Finch, Brad Haddin, Moises Henriques, Phil Hughes, Mitchell Johnson, Glenn Maxwell, Clint McKay, Adam Voges, Shane Watson.

A wi-fi music player controlled by teeth

Researchers are developing a wireless music player that fits the ear like earbuds and can be controlled by biting. The music player 'Split' eliminates headphone cords and the need for a pocket to keep the music player.

Two years under development by a start-up named Greenwing Audio in Miami Beach, Florida, Split consists of a pair of earbuds with little oblongs sticking out of them. Inside a one-inch stainless steel casing is a small circuit board, a button cell battery, a memory chip, a processor and a few other components necessary to play quality digital audio.

The Split earbuds are synchronized to act like one music player, according to 'Endgadget'. Split uses high-precision crystal clocks and a short, near-field radio signal to sync the earbuds when activating, or when the track or volume are changed. With no buttons or microphone for voice command, Split uses its accelerometers for control. These are designed to respond when the user bites. One bite changes tracks, and two bites changes the volume.

How often should you weight train to gain maximum muscles?

How often should you weight train to gain maximum muscles?

by Nirmalya Dutta

This is a question that troubles many beginners – how many times a week should you lift weights? If you talk to any fitness trainer worth his salt, he will tell you that lifting weights on alternate days, thrice a week is the right way to build muscle. Bodybuilding.com's Editor-At-Large Kris Gethin advocates weight training thrice a week.

Known for training the likes of John Abraham and Hrithik Roshan, Kris writes in his book The Bodybuilding.com Guide to Your Best Body, 'Be sure to stick to no more than three workouts in a week—don't add in extra strength-training sessions, because they will actually slow down your progress, not accelerate it. A lot of people believe that more is better and end up adding in workouts, but this is definitely not the best strategy when trying to shape your body.' (Get a chest like Hrithik or John with these exercises)

While you may believe that doing more weights may be better for you, you're wrong. What you need to understand is that your body needs rest. This is when your muscles recover and rebuild. What you're doing in the gym is simply, proving stress to your muscles. They don't actually grow in the gym but through proper nutrition, rest and recovery.

Overtraining only leads to loss of strength and tiredness. So to sum up, stick to weights thrice a week and cardio the rest of the days for a complete physique. Of course, unless you follow a proper, healthy diet, none of this will make any difference.

Anandi to boycott oaths taking

Anandi to boycott oaths taking

by Marikumar

Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Northern provincial council member elect Anandi Sasitharan has decided to boycott taking oaths in front of new Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran, the Colombo Gazette learns.

The wife of former LTTE Trincomalee District political head S. Elilan is reportedly angered by Wigneswaran's decision to take oaths before President Mahinda Rajapaksa tomorrow.

Sources close to Sasitharan said that she has also not been invited for Wigneswaran's oaths taking ceremony tomorrow.

After Wigneswaran takes oaths the remaining provincial council members of the TNA will take oaths on or after October 11.

Anandi Sasitharan has decided to take oaths in front of a Justice of Peace instead of attending the official ceremony, sources said.

Sasitharan received the second highest votes at the Northern provincial council elections after Wigneswaran.

She was invited to contest the polls by TNA General Secretary Mavai Senathirajah and just two days ahead of the polls her house was attacked by armed men.

Sources told the Colombo Gazette that Sasitharan is also disappointed with the TNA as the party has not taken concrete measures to ensure she has security after the attack.

She now feels that she was used by the party to secure votes among the Tamils in the North and is now being sidelined. (Colombo Gazette)

8 Indian substitutes for imported vegetables that could save you money

8 Indian substitutes for imported vegetables that could save you money

by Naini Setalvad

With the rise in prices of various vegetables, it is getting tougher each day to buy them especially imported ones which are even costlier than the Indian varieties. You may feel that since they are expensive, they are better for your health and are more nutritious. But that isn't really the case. They are pricey as they aren't grown in India and have to be imported from other countries. Though they have various health benefits, you can still reap them in with Indian substitutes which are cheaper and readily available in the market. Nutritionist Naini Setalvad tells us how you can cut costs by replacing expensive, imported veggies with cheaper Indian substitutes.

Lettuce

Lettuce is used in various salads, sandwiches, etc but it doesn't come cheap. You can use spinach or the Indian salad patta as both have a high nutrient content and provide similar taste in a salad. Instead of chopping the leaves, tear them. Spinach has high vitamin content like vitamin A, E, C, B2, B6, etc but is not so high in number of calories. (Read: 6 healthy salad dressing recipes for weight loss)

Chinese cabbage

Replace this with spinach again. Chop them with a knife and add it to your salads. Once the herbs and other condiments are added, it will taste the same. Spinach will protect you from free radical damage which harms the cells in your body.

Jalapeno

A favourite pizza topping for many, jalapeno is a slightly spicy vegetable which goes well in sandwiches as well. But if you can't find them or think they are too steep to invest in, opt for bhavnagari peppers instead. Marinate these in lemon and mustard and then chop them finely. Toss them on any dish you want to give a distinct flavour.

Prunes

Though you may not get the same properties, prunes can be substituted with dried figs or the Indian jardaloo (a kind of apricot). The iron content is high in both and the taste is also sweet, similar to prunes.

Cous cous

Broken wheat or whole barley seeds when soaked in water can be used instead of cous cous in dishes. Broken wheat is rich in fibre and a good source of iron, phosphorous, vitamins, minerals, etc. It is good for diabetics as well.

Zucchini

Bottle gourd or doodhi can be used in place of zucchini. Doodhi is good for people on a weight loss diet as it is low in calories. It is also good for people suffering from heart ailments as it keeps the cholesterol levels low. (Read: Take the natural route to heart health – home remedies that work!)

Parsley

The stems of coriander or dhaniya and parsley sprigs taste very similar and also look the same. They can be sprinkled on dishes as a garnish. Both of these have antioxidant properties which prevent free radical damage to the cells in our body. They also prevent from various ailments and slow down the ageing process.

Broccoli

Broccoli can be replaced with cauliflower as both of them are cruciferous vegetables belonging to the same family. They taste good in a variety of dishes likes bakes, soups, salads and even sautéed. (Read: 7 inexpensive food items to boost your fertility)

Got milk for your kid? Beware she could be lactose intolerant or allergic

Got milk for your kid? Beware she could be lactose intolerant or allergic

by Agencies

For ten-year-old Molly, it was a big deal when she ate a piece of buttered toast and nothing happened. Diagnosed with a severe milk allergy aged six months, daily life had been difficult. She and her family had to be extremely cautious and carry dairy-free food for her to consume. Molly has an allergic reaction when antibodies become over-sensitive and attack the lactose proteins in food she eats. These antibodies then bind themselves to the allergen and cause the release of chemicals, including histamine, which triggers swelling, itching, rashes and tightening of the airways. It can cause anaphylactic shock, with severe swelling, breathing difficulties and sometimes loss of consciousness, making it potentially life-threatening. A new scheme has given Molly an alternative to a life spent anxiously avoiding dairy. A UK doctor said, 'The principle is if you give someone very small doses of the allergen, very slowly building it up over time, their sensitivity to it will decrease.

In India, we often mistakenly use the term 'lactose intolerant,' for what may actually be an allergy to dairy.

What is lactose intolerance?

Dr Vipla Puri, consultant doctor at Hinduja Hispital's Reproductive Immunology Associates (RIA) Lab, has worked with food allergies for over 20 years. She explains, 'Lactose intolerance means the body is not able to break lactose into various proteins. It is due to enzyme deficiencies. Cramps, a feeling of heaviness and acid reflux are tell-tale signs.' Living with intolerance does not mean that you have to stop consuming dairy products completely. 'You can reduce your intake and watch for symptoms to reduce. In some cases you have to stop it for some time, and slowing reintroduce it into your diet,' she says. Ruchi Kumar, a new mom says that after repeated discomfort, she realised that she was intolerant to milk. 'I switched to skimmed milk and experienced much relief. Now I enjoy my milky chai and desserts without worrying about cramps and acidity.'

What is a milk allergy?

Vipla says, milk allergies are caused by the body's reaction to a specific immunoglobulin protein. 'I have seen milk allergies in 15 per cent of the 300 patients I have worked with over the past one and half years.  And even then, allergy levels differ in severity and are mostly non-life-threatening. In an allergy, the reaction — rashes, redness, swelling of lips — is immediate.' Like other food allergies, a milk allergy too is detected via a blood test. For people who have this allergy, the best option is to switch to a milk alternative. Soya, almond and rice milk are common kinds that can be consumed.

'It is crucial to be careful as many products may contain milk and you may not realise it,' Vipla says. 'Often packages are labelled in a complicated manner, marking the specific lactose protein. It should just be labelled as 'contains milk' for a layperson's benefit.' Though not always, it is possible for allergies to be reduced, though it may take a long time. 'Introducing small doses of the milk can help, like it did for Molly, but it is not a sure-shot method, and there is not time-frame. It must be done under careful supervision to avoid complications,' Vipla adds.

Low-dose allergy / antigen treatment (LDA)

Dr Amit Saraf, Consultant Physician (Internal Medicine), DNB Medicine Coordinator explains that LDA may be the best possible treatment for allergy patients. 'It is used to induce tolerance in patients with intolerances to foods and allergens in the environment. LDA is a method of allergy desensitisation using combinations of a variety of extremely low-dose allergens,' he says. LDA can either be initiated by orally starting low dose of the concerned allergen or is administered by injection of the allergen into the forearm. LDA treatments need only be given every two-three months at first, then less often.

Patients are treated every two-three months about six-eight times. After that, treatments usually decrease to every three-six months and eventually less often. The main disadvantage of LDA, especially the injectable, is that it takes six-eight injections to achieve a sustained effect that may for three months. Patients have to follow a specific protocol during the 'three critical days' when the LDA is given. This includes a restricted diet, avoidance of specific medications, allergens and chemicals and taking specific medications and supplements.

Lactose intolerance – an evolutionary tale

The story behind lactose intolerance is pretty old. Most young humans can digest raw milk's sugar component called lactose, thanks to an enzyme called lactase without any problems but they lose the ability to do so as they grow older. In fact, researchers estimate that 75% of adults around the world exhibit some form of lactose intolerance or to the use the scientist's lingo lactose non-persistent. But what caused allowed the other 25% to chug milk happily?

Scientists believe that about a thousand years ago, a genetic mutation forced a part of our species to switch from lactophobics to lactophiles! What brought on this mutation is still hotly debated. Some argue that it could be due to the nutritional benefits of milk – it was literally the first superfood for our ancestors – especially during times of famine. Individuals who could digest milk properly without suffering bouts of horrible diarrhoea were far likelier to survive longer. Of course this is all speculation and it will take a while before we figure out what makes some people love milk and others hate it.

Hansika to romance Chiyaan Vikram

It seems as if every hero in the Tamil industry wants a slice of Hansika. The bubbly girl, who shed many kilos and now looks a million bucks, is the most sought after actress in Tamil and Telugu films. After her successful outing with 'Suriya' in 'Singam 2' and 'Theeya Velai Seyyanum Kumaru' directed by Sundar C, the ravishing girl, who has commenced her shoot with Sivakarthikeyan in 'Maan Karate', has recently signed a movie with Sundar C again, which is tentatively titled 'Aranmanai', and is touted to be a supernatural thriller.

Now the big news is that she has been reportedly roped in for the Vikram-starrer which is being directed by Dharani. Apparently, Dharani and Chiyaan had, in the past, given some of the biggest blockbusters, like Dhil and Dhool, and his female leads always have a pivotal role to play rather than serve as arm candy to the heroes. Sources say that a few titles, including Rascal, are under consideration. The new film is no different as Hansika's role has been a well-etched one. Though she has not signed on the dotted line, a close source confirms the news that the Biryani actress has indeed been approached to play opposite Vikram in the new film.

Meanwhile, Hansika's Tollywood market seems to be soaring with three projects, a film with Manchu Manoj, which is a remake of the Hindi Golmaal 3; a second with Ravi Teja, which will be her first time teaming up with the Balupu star and will be a film directed by Bobby; and a third film with Nitin. To sum up, Hansika has nine films in total in K'town and T'town put together and is the busiest star in the south.

Tamil Nadu announces special TET for differently-abled BEd teachers

Tamil Nadu government on Monday said it would conduct a special Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) for differently-abled unemployed candidates with BEd degrees.

The state teachers Recruitment Board would conduct the test.

"Those differently-abled candidates with BEd, who clear TET would be employed in the backlog vacancies and in vacancies, which would arise in the future," chief minister Jayalalithaa said in a statement.

The school education department would take steps to train visually-challenged candidates and their scribes to clear the special TET through District Institute of Education and Training (DIETs) across the state.

Post graduate candidates (a total of 200 visually challenged candidates) would be employed in the backlog vacancies, once they clear the TRB test for PG candidates, she said.

As for colleges, government would take steps to employ 100 visually-challenged candidates who have cleared National Eligibility Test (NET) and State Level Eligibility Test in backlog vacancies and vacancies which would arise in future, she said.

Earlier, she chaired a meeting at the secretariat, following continuous protests by visually-challenged candidates since last week.
